March is a great time to come to Melbourne. The weather is usually still quite warm, and definately hot enough to swim at the beach. There are beaches near the city, or you could take a trip down to Lorne or Apollo Bay where the beaches are lovely.
As for animals. you could take a trip out to Werribee open plain zoo. You will definately see Kangaroos and Koalas there, or you could just head to the Melbourne Zoo. I believe that the Westin Hotel is very nice and is in the centre of the city. As for a brunch, well take your pick. head down to Port Melbourne, or to South gate. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from. Enjoy Melbourne, I know I love it here

Great Ocean Road - there's an opportunity to see koalas in the wild. Better still, Philip Island to see the penguins - they're REALLY cute!

Oh you guys are going to have lots of fun! We did last time in Melbourne. And March is a great month to visit! Take a tram to St Kilda. We stayed at the Saville Appartments and enjoyed it.
Have fun! Cheers, Ann :o)

Yes, St. Kilda would be great for brunch.
For animals I suggest the Healesville Sanctuary. This is about one hour north of Melbourne by train, and from the train station a short trip by bus to the sanctuary. It costs just some dollars to get there. Apart from the normal enclosures with all Aussie animals they have an animal hospital with glass walls and live video transmission from the surgery and x-ray rooms, so you can follow closely what happens there. They also have special education programmes for children - and stuffed animals, if you have not seen enough living ones during your visit LOL Sissi

Second vote for the Heasville sanctury to see the Aussie wildlife - and one of the few places where you can see the Platapus up close. Free city circle tram rides, parks and gardens. Best hotel IMHO is the historic Windsor in Spring Street, but there are so many to choose from. March the really hot weather will be over, but almost any of the beaches are worth going to.
Enjoy our city.

thanks to all for the answer, I am sure I will better understand how we can see the animals on the habitat and how to access those places.
As for shopping, any decent place for English boook and decent uggs, leather shoes? Affordable prices...

I used to live in one of teh National Park towns in Victoria. Visiting places like The Great Ocean road and Healsiville Sanctuary are great ways to see some of what this great stat has to offer.
The city has quite a few interesting spots like Federation Square and the Ian Potter Gallery. If you want some awsome Italian Cuisine then Lygon Street in Carlton is the place to go. Chappell Street for most of you Designer shopping needs and probably some night walks along the Docklands which gives a spectacular veiw of the city.

Great destination ! We liked it a lot there.
In Melbourne: - St. Kilda - the Parks & Botanical Gardens - Melbourne Aquarium - Melbourne Zoo - great shopping Daytrips from Melbourne: - Philips Island is a must - Ballarat (Open Air Museum/Historic Old Mining Town) - Great Ocean Road - if you include an overnight stay there: Wilsons Promontory Park (too far to do it as a daytrip)

The market is probably the best place for Ugg boots.

Try this site for some good brunch places - My favourite is MART 130 (A CONVERTED TRAM STOP).
http://thebreakfastblog.blogspot.com/2006/02/melbo Hotels is a difficult one - do you want to be in the centre of the city? Do you want a serviced apartment or a hotel room? What's you budget? I agree that Healsville Sanctuary is a great place to see wildlife but for something a bit different, you could go to the Melbourne Zoo Twilight evenings. See http://www.zoo.org.au/melbourne/twilights.htm for details. It's a lovely place to spend an evening, listen to some music, have a picnic and see the animals at night when many are more active. You will just make it for the last few nights.
