| Ankara | housing in ankara, plus questions about cappadocia Posted: Tue January 15, 2008 07:13 PM UTC
hey all,
ill be spending a month in the ankara area this spring and im wondering about some logistical/cost-of-living stuff. first of all, is flatshare the cheapest way to go for housing? if so, can anyone recommend a good flatshare-finding website or suggest another way to find a room to rent? what are alternative hosing options? i'm goingfor cheap, cheap, cheap! how much might one spend on food over a month in ankara? (buying groceries, plus going out occasionally?) I apologize for this barrage of questions. I'll actually be in the area to study the underground cities in cappadocia.. does anyone have experiences with those sites? is there housing in cappadocia itself? any recommendations would be wonderful! look forward to any replies. thanks! kc |

Hi Kit,
One month in Ankara is too much lost of time. 2 or 3 daya are enough to explore Ankara. Better spent all your time in Cappa.Spring is the best season in Turkey. I am sure you will love it. If you dont eat at exclusive restraunds Ankara and Cappa is verry very very very cheep. Cola+doner+ bread= 2.50 TL A half grilled chicken 4 or 5 or 6 TL Turkish pizza= 3 0r 4 TL The best experience is self-experience. To rent a room for one month is impossible in Ankara. Because pension system is not well known in Ankara.Old ladies are not used to have tendors at home. I am afraid you will be hosting in a hotel.

Hi,
Food expenses depend on what you prefer.Turkish fastfoods (not the American ones like Mc Donalds etc)cost about 3-5 YTL (turkish lira). If you eat in a cheap restaurant you pay about 7-10 TL.In a medium price cafe or restuarant you will pay about 15 ytl.Fruits cost about 2-5 YTL/ kg .Meat costs about 12-15 ytl/kg.Vegetables cost about 3-5 YTL/ kg depending on the type.Cheese 7-10 ytl/kg.A small jar of jam is about 3-4 YTL.Butter (small package) is about 1 YTL. http://www.kangurum.com.tr/kangurum3-web/browseSho Above is a website of internet food shopping. It is in Turkish but there are pictures of the food so you can have some idea. http://www.yemeksepeti.com/index.asp .And this is an online food delivery site.Again in Turkish but with clicking on "ara" (it means search ) you can have some idea about restaurant prices. About housing there aren't many family accomodations but maybe if you write again here about a room rental maybe you can find a room.I know that sometimes people can find a a room using this site.(By the way Ankara is not very close to Cappadoce.) These are a few pages I found on internet about pensions in cappadoce. http://www.ozmenpension.com/price_en.html http://www.tanpension.com/aboutus/index.htm http://www.medpension.com/noschambres.htm
