| Girona | Costa Brava Posted: Tue January 15, 2008 06:09 PM UTC
Hi, We may be flying to Girona in late February and are looking for a nice place to stay, especially on the coast. Does anyone have any recommendations? And what is the weather generally like in late February?
Many thanks for any help you can give. Cathy |

The Costa Brava is famous for the strong winds (tramuntana) and February on this area is one of the coldest months. But don't be scared for this, only well prepared (provided you were not hoping to sunbathe on the beach, you can have a very nice trip).
As it's low season many hotels on the seaside may be closed. However, we had a couple of great long weeekends during Winter at Cadaques and Tossa de Mar. Can't help about where we stayed as it was quite a few years ago, before VT ;o) Since then I moved to Barcelona and I returned many times to the area but as daytrips. Cadaques is beautiful and a must if you like Dali, but it may be difficult to reach if you don't have a car (reason why it's still nice). Tossa has a nice old town and castle. Allow some time to visit Girona itself, the old town is a gem.

Some years ago we celebrated our wedding anniversary, on February 1st, at the Parador at Aiguablava.
I remember the weather as very bright and sunny but there were certainly some very stong cooling winds..warm clothing was essential. But there were few people about and we enjoyed vists to Begur and Pals, and the Roman site at Empuries as well as the place already mentioned above. For us it was a memorable visit.

Thank you both for your replies. I'll be sure to be prepared for the string winds, and we'll have a car for exploring. Thanks again.

Hi
Eatartit is a small town only about 20/25 mins drive from Girona airport. Not sure about February but it is quite pleasant in summer, espacially if you stay near the harbour rather than on the outskirts. A.

L'Estartit ;)
Yes it's nice even it will be half-dead in Feb. Pals old town (not the new one in the coast) is another of my favourites. Having a car you can move around and discover many of these nice towns, even you can cross the French border to Colliure, Banyuls.... Or explore inland towns as Besalu with its Medieval bridge, Ripoll, Castellfollit de la Roca.... well, you have some names to google now :)

Thanks for your correction, L'Estartit it is indeed when my finger does not find the wrong letter on the keyboard!!!!
Another suggestion for a cultural visit, the Dali museum in Figueres. A.

I do make typos all the time... thanks Firefox has this nice spelling tool :) but of course sp tools don't recognize town's names anyway
Yes, Figueres is another nice place. Not only the Dali museum, most visitors miss to wander around this pleasant town, it's interesting Toy Museum, and surprisingly very few know (and even less visit) the biggest fortress in Europe (Castell de Sant Ferran)

We booked a hotel today in Roses. Any of you familiar with that town? Looks very nice from what I've seen on the hotel website, but I can't find a whole lot more elsewhere.
