Granada Flamenco show
Posted: Tue January 15, 2008 01:44 PM UTC
Please, can someone give me an advice about Flamenco shows in Granada? I found in internet a list of locals where it is possible to have a dinner and to see a show:
Cueva La Rocío
Cueva Los Tarantos
Cueva María La Canastera
Peña Flamenca La Platería
Sala Albaicín
Sala Vimaambi " Raiz y Duende"
Venta El Gallo
I don't konw how choose one of them.
Thanks

Both my wife and myself saw this family in Cueva María La Canastera and I can honestly say that the show was brilliant. They are literally at your feet when they all dance, and with such enthusiasm. The younger members of the family really give the show some zest, and the cave surroundings you will remember for many years to come. I highly recommend this family. Regards, Velezboy

For the most part the cave clubs (cuevas) are considered a tourist rip-off, so I've avoided them in my visits to Granada. However Maria La Canastera seems to have enjoyed some fame and even danced for King Alfonso XIII so this cave club might be different. The last time I was in Granada shows at this club were by special arrangement only - there needs to be a group of at least 20 people. The shows start around 9:30 p.m. or later. If you want to go as an individual or as a couple you can call ahead to find out if there is a show booked and join that group. Telephone: 666-647-895. La Cueva de Maria La Castanera is also open as a museum Sat & Sun noon - 5 p.m. You might check with her son Enrique just to make sure this is still the case. His number is 958-121-183. There is bus service to Sacromonte where the cave clubs are located. For info about bus service in English the number to call is 900-710-900.

La Plateria is a private gypsy club located in the Albaicin area at Placeta de Toqueros, 7. There is no sign. Just a number 7 on the small door. Members are given preference on Saturday nights, but I've shown up on a Saturday and been allowed in. There is no entrance fee. Shows start at 11 p.m.

You will love Granada, Fred

Add "La Chumbera" in Sacramonte high on that list. It's not that well known despite it having the big stars and best views! Only drawback is their concerts aren't weekly. Not sure if the venue is open in winter.

I agree with the tourtis rip off senario..
I can tell you one to avoid ; )

Tablao de Flamenco - Albaycin.
(See my Granada 'rip off tip)

However, there is a small bar, one of the first on the left as you go up the hill, called Bar Flamenco.
This is not a show bar, but a casual gypsy bar and we loved it.
Free entry, amazing views, small back cave room for the performers, so advise get there before 11pm if you want a seat.

Just curious, what is the cost associated with the Cueva de Maria de la Canastera?? Ihave never been to any flamenco shows so what does it entail normally? I mean, yeah, Ihave seen flamenco, pero the ones in Granada in Sacramonte, no.
