| Cape Town | Winelands - how far away from Cape Town is it? Posted: Tue January 15, 2008 08:09 AM UTC
Hi i'm hoping to spend a few days in Cape Town but have to go to the Winelands for a concert, was wondering if its best to get another hotels in the Winelands for that depending on how far away from Cape Town this may be? Also where are the best night clubs?
Thanks! |

The winelands and Cape Town are adjacent to each other, so the distance depends on where you are staying or visiting within each region. If you are staying in Cape Town suburb of Simons Town and the concert is in Wellington, then it could take over an hour to travel the distance.

Ah thanks, ok. Well I'll be going to VERGELEGEN WINE ESTATE in Somerset West if that gives you any ideas? Can't seem to find it on a map...

Hi
Vergelegen is in somerset west (its STUNNING!!!!!) - about 35-40 minutes from cape Town central- the main issue i think is safety- If it was me- i would rather spend a night in Somerset west (avoid driving along the N1 Highway) late at night - then come back to Cape Town the following morning. Try any guest hoses or B and Bs in somerset west or Strand they are close by and the Strand has a stuning Beach to swim or even just walk along!!! Although its not far by many standards- the safety issue is the main reason that i would not drive that road late at night unless it was essential. enjoy the concert!! Where are you planning to stay in cape Town- If you are into clubs - there are quite a few -depends on your likes - Camps bay is really rocking these days (Karma) but tell me what you like- then i can advise better Mandy

Excellent hotel, 10 mins from Vergelegen: http://www.straightwayhead.com/
Tiny correction to Mandy....it is the N2 highway past the airport to Somerset West. Totally agree to avoid that highway in the dark. Driving within the "winelands" (Somerset West, Vergelegen, Stellenbosch) is safe at all hours. Apparently there is a bit of a club scene in Stellenbosch as well Mandy? - might make sense to stay in Stellies instead of Somerset?

Both Gerald and Mandy made very valid points! I would just like to add that unfortunately it is not ALWAYS safe to drive in Stellenbosch and Somerset West, but compared to the N2, its a breeze... Just have your wits about you and you should be fine!
As Gerald mentioned, Stellenbosch has quite a bit of nightlife, but since this is a student town it consists more of pubs and smaller 'clubs' which do not have any of the Camps Bay glamour, but is still lots of 'more-down-to-earth' fun! Stellenbosch is MUCH less expensive than the surrounding Cape Town areas, though... Even though there is no beach, it is still really beautiful! Worth staying for a night and maybe going on a wine tour the next day! Let me know if you decide to stay in Stellenbosch and need any recommendations. (By the way, Vergelegen was voted the favourite SA winery of 2007 by Wine magazine! Enjoy!)

One more thing: To answer the original question. There is a good map that shows Vergelegen (when zooming in on the winelands), Stellenbosch and their relative position to Cape Town at: http://www.safarinow.com/destinations/western-cape/map.aspx
