| Auckland | robbery Posted: Fri January 11, 2008 03:41 PM UTC
Hi all,
we came back from Auckland last Friday. About 2 houres before we left, we got blagged. We parked in downtown Auckland about 10 min. away from the Sky Tower, and when we came back, our Campervan broked open. They didn`t find money or passports, but they took our sleeping bags, tent, souveniers, slide rolls, dirty cloths,.... with them - all in all in an amount off about 1.500 Euro or even more. But I think they can do anything with the most of the stuff. So my question: does exist something like an lost property office in Auckland? Cause I think they throw some of the things just away. And if an lost property office exist, how can I contact them? The police did and do not help us! Thanks for your help |

Bad Luck!
Unfortunately you have not said where you are now but as you mention Euros I assume you are back somewhere in Europe. I think in most towns and cities Lost Property is usually run by the Police, except that airports, train and bus stations often have their own Lost property for items left behind on a journey, or otherwise lost in transit. Do you have travel Insurance to cover the theft? If you do, you would most probably need to have a Crime Report Number from the Police to whom the theft was reported - or, if your campervan was hired one - something in writing from the hire firm stating that it had been broken into and the Police were informed. Without any of this, based on my own experience of being robbed, I suspect it is unlikely that your property will be recovered. It would be particularly unlikely if you are no longer on the same continent. Very bad luck indeed.

I am interested in the police response you are talking about. Did you call the police and they said they would or could not help you? And did they not give you an inquiry number, as you would need a police report for possible insurance claims? If this happened, you can lay a complaint. And it would also be interesting for the AKL newspaper (The New Zealand Herald) to know about it.

Hi Sissi,
as you have been describing above, we called the police and they gave us an inquiry number. I would say, that they havenīt realy been a big help, as they a have not even shown up, but this seems to be the usual practice for me. The post to this forum was done with th purpose to get some of the stuff back, as the police inquire number does not help a lot, if the insurance is not covering it. Thanks anyhow, Anja

Why won't your insurance cover the loss?
I don't understand that - now that you are able to provide a Police Inquiry/ Crime Report Number. Nothing can compensate fot the upset and hassle of a holiday that ends so badly but at least recovery some of your financial loss helps. Most Insurance Companies have an "excess Amount of xxx" so that the first XXX amount of the loss is not covered but I would have thought you should get something.
