Mérida Car rentals
Posted: Fri January 11, 2008 02:39 AM UTC
We want to rent a car for one month (beginning mid-February) at Merida airport. We are looking for an all inclusive rental rate. Where should we find the best deal?
Thanks.

I don't know if you can find an all inclusive rental rate though. I was never able to find that sort of rate. The $30 per day or $40 per day rates that are generally available in downtown Merida cover you for 90% of the value of the car if you get into an accident. So I was budgeting for a $2000 bill if we got into any accident (most of the rental cars we saw were not new, so I thought that valuing them at $20,000 was being generous). Perhaps it is different at the airport, and you will be able to find a totally all-inclusive rate there.

When you have rented your car, please post again to this thread. I'd love to find out what other tourists rented their cars for.

right,
we paid $377 per x-mass week for little Athos. Our deductible on case of the accident would be $1000. We could pay i think $7 a day to lower it to $500 or $14 to have full coverage. We decided not to pay extra. We have been driving in Greece, Spain, Portugal, Poland and never had anything happen to us.
I also think my american Express would be willing to cover that deductible....but I am not sure.
Anyway, I would not recomant Athos, but next time I would get WV Lupo. I would also not recomend car with radio, or any other fancy car for that matter. Although, we never had any problems or suspicious of the problems, I could imagine that if your car is too fancy, it will be a magnet for something to happen.

Our experience in Merida was a little cheaper. We rented a VW Pointer for 300 pesos per day (one day free if you rent for a week), or 400 pesos per day if the car had A/C. So that rate would be 2400 pesos or $240 US per week for unlimited mileage and two drivers. But that was with 10% of the value of the car (approx $2000US) as a deductable, not $1000US.

We were a little worried about getting into an accident, and drove extra carefully as I assumed no matter what type of accident I could get into, I would be blamed for it as I was a tourist and therefore by definition, I should have money.
