Havana Security in Havana
Posted: Thu January 10, 2008 09:51 AM UTC
Hi Fellow travellers

I´m heading off to Cuba for the first time in two weeks and am a little worried about carrying money on me. I will be staying at a reputable casa particular but have been told that it would be unwise to leave valuables anywhere that doesn´t have a safe or security box.

Any advice on this matter?

Do not worry about security in Cuba. I carried $$ all the time and never had a problem. Don't be dumb about it--be just as careful with your $ as you would when traveling anywhere. The only thing to worry about is DO NOT BUY cigars off the street. Cuba monitors this industry and will not allow counterfeiting or illegally selling them on the street.

Also, it's very important do not exchange on streets with cuban people, as we have 2 kinds of currency(Pesos Cubanos and Pesos Convertibles(CUC)), I suggest to exchange on Banks or Casa De Cambios(CADECAS)...I mean, exchange, for example, from EUR into CUC or from CUC into Pesos Cubanos.
There is some "friendly" cubans on streets that used to sell Tabaco, or exchange money...and you can't trust them.

1 EUR= 1.30 CUC

1 USD= 0.82 CUC

1 CUC= 24 Pesos Cubanos.

CUC is the main currency over here.

good luck.
