| Grand Canyon | South Rim and Skywalk Posted: Wed January 9, 2008 11:06 AM UTC
After a 2 night stay at Chinle, we plan to drive from Chinle to Las Vegas.
Enroute, we would like to visit the South Rim. Is it advisable to stay overnight? The following morning, we would like to continue to the Skywalk. Is a couple of hours there sufficient? We hope to get to Las Vegas by night fall for dinner and then to catch our flight out at 11:30pm. Any advise on timing for the drive? All suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

Don't do the Grand Canyon by just stopping in and looking at it. Absolutely stay the night, and try to spend the next day there. To stay in the park, you'll need to book ASAP as the lodges fill up quickly for the peak periods (summer).
The Skywalk costs about $75/person and takes nearly two hours to get to from the highway. You also cannot take cameras onto it. It's not worth it for you, I don't think. Spend that extra time at the South Rim and really enjoy yourselves. The drive to Vegas should be pretty much non-stop, unless you'd like to stop at Hoover Dam (they have tours). hth

I totally agree, the Skywalk is a total tourist trap and quite a long and UNscenic drive from the actual many beautiful overlooks and rim trails at the south rim. The view at the skywalk is not that much different from the views at the south rim, just the novelty of walking out "over" the canyon. Skip it!
