| Mumbai | Linking Road advice Posted: Wed January 9, 2008 09:44 AM UTC
Hi
I have been recommended Linking Road as an area to buy good Indian clothes, could anyone tell me if this is correct and tell me a bit about this area, what hotel options are available. Also, I understand that there is a small wholesale only shoppung outlet type of thing close by ..any idea what this might be called ? |

Hi - Yes Linking Road is a pretty good option. It's gotten very busy now with malls and a lot of western clothing stores - and a lot of foreigners do shop there so I don't think it's necessarily the best or the cheapest. If you buy from the stalls (anywhere in Mumbai) you need to bargain hard. Start at about 1/3 to 1/2 of the asking price and go from there.
A good place to shop is the local markets - such as Vile Parle. Lots of stores and mostly Indians doing their shopping. Good deals on clothes, etc. I haven't heard about the wholesale outlet so can't help you there. There are hotels in the Linking Road area - those would be in towns of Bandra or Khar. A little further north of there is the Juhu beach area where there are several hotels. All depends on your budget. Prices run all over here. Enjoy!

Personally I would use the recommendations of other travelers when it comes to hotels. The standards may be different here and they also vary quite a lot. What kind of budget are you working with? I'll see if I can check with some other foreigners who are living here.
Ohhh yea, no disrespect to Mr. Biswas, but as a foreigner you will be taken advantage of quite frequently. One scam is that if you go shopping - to a market or store - and you are with an Indian - they will speak to the Indian in Hindi and tell that person that if they persuade you to buy some things, the shopkeeper will give a commission to the Indian with you!!

donna its not as you say always.
all the people here are not the same as you have mentioned. THERE IS A WHOLESALE MARKET OF INDIAN CLOTHES IN DADAR. YOU CAN BUY FROM RETAIL AS YOU HAVE TO BUY IN SMALL QUANTITY. SO U CAN BUY FROM LINKING ROAD. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUERY OR NEED ANY MORE HELP. YOU CAN EMAIL ME ON dharmesh.nandu@gmail.com bye

Mr. Dharmesh, since you are not a foreigner here, how do you know how foreigners are treated? It's common knowledge - even printed in the newspapers here - of shopping comparisons between an Indian and a foreigner - where the foreigner is charged as much as TEN times what the Indian is charged for the same item. It goes beyond to rickshaw drivers, taxi drivers, etc. While this kind of thing does go on in many places around the world, no one should be unaware or ignore the fact that it does go on here.
