Can not help you with accommodation in Auckland, always stay with relatives.

But for a car rental I recommend: McDonalds Rent a Car.
Last visit we used (due to a tip from VT member ‘kiwi’) McDonalds Rent a Car. This is a smaller family owned company with offices in Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington, Picton and Christchurch.
They are not the cheapest in this business, but a lot less expensive than the ‘big’ companies.

You are quick in booking! So I can save my energy LOL Could have recommended you lots of hotels and motels in AKL where I have already stayed.

My first choice in car rental companies which allow one way rentals and are a lot cheaper than the big companies is Ace Rental Cars:

One other car rental company ( from NZ$15 per day) is A2B car rentals at http://www.a2brentals.co.nz/ They have a NZ$100 fee for dropping the car off in Christchurch, but that beats having to backtrack. I always recommend this company to my overseas visitors and all have found it to be a good cheap reliable company.
