I have a question about taking travelers checks. I was thinking of doing this. Is there easy access to a bereau de exchange in the airport? Once I get to the hostel, would they be able to exchange American money to the Real?

Also, could I go to any bank and ask? Thanks!

You can go to the bank and stand in line for most of your vacation......sure. TCs are useless in Brazil (maybe as backup if you already own some old ones). Take a credit card or 2 to use most everywhere and plan to access the ATMs for cash. The easiest place to exchange cash, if you insist, is a casa do cambio. It's not a good idea to be wandering around with a lot of cash on your person.

make sure you alert your credit card company you will be using your cards in another country---i have heard horror stories of people's credit cards getting shut down. also, make sure your atm card will work in brazil.

I live in Rio de Janeiro and I have many clients foreign why I work on a french restaurant, I always recomend that They use card here you donīt need money here just come with card it is enought to you. Have a good trip!
