Has anyone done the 8-day organized tour from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp back to Lhasa? Can you share your experience? I'm trying to decide between simply visiting Lhasa or paying the extra USD$400-500 to check out Everest and other Tibetan areas outside of Lhasa.

I did the 5-day tour. It was an interesting experience. You'll be on the road most of the time occasionally stopping but the views are amazing (alps, lakes, etc). Even the monasteries have different attractions on their own. Of course Everest Base Camp is a highlight of its own.
Normally you find others who would want to do it the same dates and share the expense (and beer and laughs at each pit stop).

Why don't you look at a Lhasa, Everest, Kathmandu tour? It might be cheaper and you won't have to backtrack. The views are incredible, you won't regret going to Everest, also the views past Everest on the way to Nepal are the most amazing I have ever seen.
You will want 5 days in Lhasa to look around and aclimatise to the altidude.
