| Rio de Janeiro | where to store a suitcase for 10-12 hours Posted: Mon January 7, 2008 07:01 PM UTC
I will arrive by cruise in Rio on a sunday morning, at 07.00am and the ship offers a tour to Corcovado starting at 8.00am and dropping me and my luggage at the airport at noon, while my flight is leaving at 09.00pm.
So that does not really make sense to me. Is it possible to check in my luggage at the airport already in the morning and take a taxi then for sightseeing with just my handluggage ? (I am flying with TAP) Or are there at least lockers for the luggage at the airport ? how much would a taxi be from the cruise-port to the airport ? --- In case that I take the shipstour to Corcovado that ends at the airport, I will have at least 4-5 hours for sightseeing in the afternoon, WHAT is possible to do within that time, when I have to start at the airport ? Sugar Loaf/ Pao de Azucar would be fine Ipanema and Coppacabana just for some pics and a bit of sand in my shoes ? What else is possible within 4-5 hours |

Depending on how much luggage you are travelling with, you could leave all but what you need to wander around the city for the day in the 'guarda volumes' (baggage storage) of the local airport, Santos Dumont, right in the city, on the water. it has proven to be safe on the occasions when I have done this. they have locker, but also a guarded room for larger items. When you are ready to leave for the international airport (which is about an hour outside of town at an hour without much traffic), you can retrieve your luggage and take either the frequent shuttle bus or a taxi to GIG. Leaving time for a bit of traffic and your check-in, you might have until about 5 in the afternoon to sightsee. (Anyone more local than I am who knows the traffic pattern better, just chime in.)
I think you could probably fit in both Pau d'Acucar and a bit of time at the beach, for a drink at least, if you travel by taxi. Or Pau D'Acucar and Corcovado-- and have your drink on top of one of those peaks. Another alternative is to hire a private guide with a vehicle for the day. (I can make a recommendation on p.m. if you like.)

thanks a lot, that sounds good !
private guide with a vehicle for the day also came into my mind, but this kind of thing only makes sense when I find other people onboard, who are willing to share that car with me and also a reliable driver.

I think you should take a taxi from the ship to the domestic airport how baiana said and let your lugagge there. You don't need a tour to Corcovado nor Pao de Acucar, you can get a taxi to the places and buy the ticket yourself. On Sundays the Avenue lane close to the beaches are closed to traffic, so it's better to take a taxi from in the direction Copacabana to Ipanema if you want to see the beach. For the traffic to the airport one hour on Sundays will be more than you need.
