Mexico City Special historic / traditional Mexican hotel in safe central area Mexico City?
Posted: Sun January 6, 2008 10:47 PM UTC
Hi everyone

The subject probably sums it up! I'm trawling through the web looking at hotels in Mexico City, trying to find something that's special, historical / traditional Mexican, central and in a nice safe area, near restaurants and tourist interest spots....but I'm not having any luck so far.

Everything seems to be either far too expensive / chains (which we try to avoid) / very mordern or very business oriented.

Any tips would be gratefully received!

-Gran Hotel de la Ciudad de México, is downtown and its gorgeous, perhaps it's out of your budget, but its worth to check it out. www.granhotelciudaddemexico.com
-La Casona, is in the Roma area, is not far from downtown and its a very charming neiborghood with a lot of restaurants, galleries and nice cafes to spend the afternoon in. www.hotellacasona.com.mx, they have cultural packages that include the entrances to museums, ask for thems when you make your reservation.
-Condesa Df, its part of a a very nice minimalistic hotels chain, it's in Condesa area, very centric and its in an old building, really good food and excellent service. Perhaps is not what you where looking for, but it worths the look. www.condesadf.com
-Casa Vieja. in the Polanco Area, one of the nicest areas in the city, quite near of the city center and close to a lot of museums. It's an old house and a very intimate and nice place to stay. www.casavieja.com, 300USD the night, per room.

If you would like something cheaper, please let me know, anyways I will try to look for something. Have a great trip!!!

Thanks aislas, the budget isn't too tight as it is our honeymoon (though we are spending the first week in a very expensive resort so can't say money is no object either!)

I had looked at all of the hotels you mentioned, but reviews were mixed on Tripadvisor. I was particularly looking at La Casona and the reviews on Tripadvisor that happen to be negative don't seem to be TOO horrendous....

Can others vouch for La Casona? It does look nice.

Have booked La Casona so please only slate it if it's absolutely dreadful and we REALLY need to know! I'm hoping it will be nice as it will be the end of our honeymoon!

Mexico City The Red Tree House - Mexico City

I've read some reviews of The Red Tree House (private home/ B&B style) in Colonia Condesa and it might serve your purposes very well.

Centro Historico (where the Zocalo is located) probably isn't a good place to base yourself. It's a high-crime area and very quiet after 9 p.m. (with many darkened sstreets). Also, most of what there is to see/do in Mexico City is not located in that district. Visit there by day, stay elsewhere at night.
