Yes, this is a classic case of needing more information...
If you are flying directly from another continent, then the most convenient airport (once you are on the ground) is probably Malpensa near Milan. You'll need an hour to get from the airport to the train station (by bus), then about 3.5 hours to go by train to Bolzano with a likely change in Verona. However, if you are coming from within Europe either because you are starting from there or are hitting a gateway airport first (London, Frankfurt, Zurich, etc.), you have a lot more airports that are closer, such as Verona, Treviso, Venice, even Innsbruck (I assume there's an airport there, you know, I never noticed ;-) )...You will note that I am prejudicing this from the Italian point of view. One reason is that trains will be quicker to Bolzano coming from the south because of the terrain (the train from Milan is, as noted, 3.5 hours, while the train solution from Zurich - not a lot farther, but definitely through the heart of the Alpes - will be 6 to 8 hours). The second reason is that rail travel in Italy is cheaper per kilometer than it is in other countries. A typical fare on the Italian side from Milan to Bolzano is only 28.00 euro second way one way - although this will vary based on which trains you end up taking (the price varies somewhat based on the speed and type of train). Munich (Munchen) in Southern Germany maybe an option if flying from overseas, too... (ciao, Bill!)

Yeah, Francesco, I didn't mention Munich partially because I don't know that there are any direct flights from North America to Munich (there don't seem to be any from New York or Chicago, which is all I checked).
Of course, while there are direct trains from Munich to Bolzano (or, at least, there used to be), the price is bound to be higher than coming from the Italian side, since the German rail system is a lot more expensive that the Italian one... Still, maybe with some more information on the OP, we can do a better answer ;-) Ciao'!!! Bill

unless things have changed very recently, Lufthansa flies nonstop from Newark and JFK into Munich once a day. Seems a long way from Bolzano esp in winter though.

Just for fun, I asked the Swiss rail website (www.sbb.ch) to price the Zurich to Bolzano run - apparently, they won't price international trips online but will send you an email (or perhaps it was because this trip included a segment - Innsbruck to Bolzano - that was totally outside of Switzerland).
In any case, they priced the Zurich to Innsbruck trip at 84.00 Swiss francs - about $75USD...and told me that I would have to buy the Innsbruck to Bolzano segment locally ;-) This is a lot more than the 28 euro for Milan to Bolzano...in case anyone cares...like the OP...who hasn't come back ;-) Bill
