| Cuzco | Choquequirao – Machu Picchu trek Posted: Sun January 6, 2008 11:31 AM UTC
Hi!
I and my girlfriend are thinking about taking this nine days trek in May. Could someone who has taken this trek give us some informations about it because we do not have any expiriences in this type of treks. How hard is this trek? Do you need very good physical condtition. We are planning to do some mountaineering till the trip. Which tour operator do you recommend? And price? Thank you for answer Greetings Uros |

Its kind of demanding but not too much. The first part you'll be going up from Abancay till you hit the ruins, from there to the river is ok, most of it downhill. Then you walk along the river which is good b/c of the lower altitude, the walk will take you to ColcoPampa (nice thermal baths here), and from here is a straight downhill till Sta Teresa (. From Colcopampa the next town will be La Playa, here either follow the improved road to the right (much easier) or the small almost vanishing trail on the left (much more peacefull, no vehicles here)
Dont know any operators, but you can do this trip by yourselves. Plenty of villages along the way to buy food from and to stay overnight. All you need is a good map. Get it either at Instituto geografico nacional (in LIma) or at SouthAmerican Explorers (one in Lima -Miraflores- one in Cuzco -San Blas) Enjoy your trip!!! Luis

Hi Uros.
A good tip, you better take an organised tour due to the demands of this trek, you will need mules or horses, specially for the parts going up the hill....it is demanding and a horse will help a lot on carring your belongings, take a look to your mail, there is an itinerary wich descrives day by day this program so you will have a better idea what is this about. If you have further questions just drop me a note. have fun
