do you need to have special water-shoes when swimming in the sea of the north coast of Crete- island. In summer we stay for two weeks in Kissamos, have a rental car and want to see a lot of the island

I think most of the Northern coast beaches are sandy... but on the west & certainly on the south (libyan sea) many gorgeous beaches are pebbly. If u can spare the room in your case, throw in a pair of those thin rubber water shoes -- you can use them for slippers too.

I always take a pair of "sea slippers" - even when the beaches are sandy, that sand can get very hot!

I do always...since I am afraid of sea urchin....they are present on the rocky coast.
Every stone I step on feels to me like sea urchin....so I just got a shoes. My Hubby is not paranoid and he never had a problem going barefoot. I travelled 3 times to Crete already (1998, 2006, 2007), each time driving around. Have lots of good tips, hotels, restaurants and stuff on my pages. See if you like :-) Not only Crete Island, but also my favorite 2 towns Chania & Rethymno.... good luck
