| Helsinki | Public transportation, what's best: pay as you go or HKL tourist ticket? Posted: Sat January 5, 2008 10:06 PM UTC
As part of a weekend trip to Helsinki, I'm in charge of the logistics part - meaning how to get where from the hostel/hotel and how much it's going to cost. We haven't booked any places yet but we're debating between Stadion Hostel, Eurohostel and Omena Hotel. The place that no one wants to miss out on is Temppeliaukio church and everything else seems like "whatever I say". With that said, some other places of interested might be the Museum of Technology, Helsinki Car Museum and if the time and weather allows it either Suomenlinna fortress or Högholmen zoo.
Last time I was there the single ticket cost 2€ and was valid for an hour, and I know that a lot of attractions are within walking distance from each other but based on the itinerary and the hotel/hostels listed above, what's the best option for us: pay as you go or buy a 3-day HKL tourist ticket? The ETA is mid April and it might be early evening Friday to noon Sunday. Thanks in advance. |

Ah yes, if time allows it, Heureka Vetenskapscenter in Vantaa is included. Afaik the HKL ticket isn't valid to go to Vantaa but we must buy a ticket at the train station in Helsinki, right?

Hello and thanks,
Yes, what you call Korkesaari (spelling?) is what we in Sweden call Högholmen zoo. Thanks for your help :)

Do you think that the tourist ticket is good for bus 615 to HEL?

Hello,
You could check this website: www.ytv.fi It's all about public transport, also in Swedish and in English. There is a Travel Card that you can use for the whole group, and when you pay for the journey with that card,it's 1,80 within the city and 3,40 from Helsinki to Espoo (or Vantaa airport). There is a R-kioski selling these travel cards (ie you just need one) at the airport. For example,if you are 4 people travelling in the group, you just pay from the card 4 times and you have the ticket for 80 minutes for everyone. The bus from the airport to the bus station in Helsinki centre takes a little over 30 minutes (ie the bus number 615). If you know your hotel you can of course drop at metro station and get closer to your palce straight away. The zoo is within reach very easily and the ferry to Suomenlinna is operated by p+ublic transport so the ticket for the ferry is valid for 80 minutes. Have a nice stay in Helsinki, regards,Soili
