| Montevideo | Travel Montevideo to Igauzu or Buenes Aires Posted: Fri January 4, 2008 03:57 PM UTC
Hi,
I'll be in Rio in October and plan to travel to Iguazu then onto Montevideo and along the coast to BA from there BUT the reviews of the bus journey from Foz de Igauzu to Montevideo are less than compelling. Can anyone suggest a better way of doing this? After BA we plan to head up to Bolivia and that seems best from Buenes Aires, so would Rio to BA to Igauzu to Montevideo be less hassle. I'm not fussed bussing/planes, whatever is the best value for less hassle!! Thanks much, Gav |

Why not go to BA from Foz - from there you can take a short ferry ride to Montevideo and back. That's the route I took. I would also recommend going to Colonia, Uruguay.

There are no direct flights from either the Brasilian or Argentine airports at Iguazu to Montevideo. The bus trip from Iguazu to Buenos Aires is not great either, a bit over 17 hours but it is fairly cheap. In order to fly I assume you would be getting a one way ticket and LAN or Aerolíneas Argentinas would be your two choices from the Argentine side. Leaving from the Brasilian airport would require going back to Sao Paulo first and then connecting to either a Buenos Aires or Montevideo flight. LAN's web site is www.lan.com and AA is http://www.aerolineas.com.ar/ From the Brasil side your choices would be GOL http://www.voegol.com.br/INT/ or TAM http://www.tamairlines.com/
As the other post noted your simplest and cheapest choice would be a bus to Buenos Aires and then the ferry to Montevideo. The ferry web site is http://www.buquebus.com/ Suerte SAM

Thanks to both of you; I think the best option would be to fly from Foz then do a return trip to Montevideo from BA. I'd planned to go to Colonia too, so do you have any advice on things to see along the cost and in these cities and (mainly) can you suggest how long this will take - I think 4 days would be okay?

I only went to Colonia and Montevideo in Uruguay. I would highly recommend Colonia not so much Montevideo. 4 days is more than enough. Colonia is very small and you can easily see it in a day - it's just a nice place to walk around, soak your feet in the water, have a nice picnic lunch, etc.
Just as a FYI (if you want to save $$), I took the bus journey from Foz to BA and it was fine...nothing to worry about. Have a great time!

There is not much to see between Colonia and Montevideo, a lot of farms. One day is most likely enough for Colonia and then a couple days in Montevideo.
