Hi, I'm looking for either a studio flat or a domatia for myself from 15th May to 23rd May 2008 inclusive, preferably in Chania itself. Can anyone help, please. Ruth

Try reposting your query over on both Fodors.com and Lonelyplanet.com. There are several Crete and Chania experts there.

At that time of year it is simply a matter of looking around in the streets behind the harbout in Chania. There are numerous domatia (rooms for rent) and studio appartments in the area. I just turn up and look around, always seem to find something satisfactory.

Redruth, what is your budget? 30Euro per night? or less? It is harder to get a single, I know. and a studio with a small kitchen or gas-ring will certainly save on breakfasts, at least.
The 15th is a Thursday, and if you arrive by mid-day, you should be able to get something on a walk-in basis. I would strongly advise the West side of Chania town... much the nicest & fun area to stay, and also a lot of choices. Start at the sea end of Theotokopoulou Street right by the West Wall in Chania Town, and walking down that street.... it is chock-a-block with hotels, small pensions and Rooms. Internet friends of mine in May 2007 walked up to Pension Nora, 60 Theotokopoulu Street, and got a studio w. kitchen facil for 2 for about 30 Euros in May 2007. I just googled it & got TEL +30-821-72 265. Several other studios that I was in contact with that have web pages were (1) iason Studios and (2) Pension Eva (the latter has no Kitchen facilities). Truly, in the 3-4 "block" stretch of this no-cars flagstoned street, there must be 15 small hotels, and as many signs of "rooms to let". So why not start with Pension Nora in mind, and try your luck. Where I've stayed twice, happily, is a renovated old house (1500s):Casa di Pietra, 37 Theotokopoulu. It used to be only on the Chania Guide website but now seems to have its own page AND an e-mail, which means prices will be going up, alas. www.casadipietra.gr/ It cost us 45 for a triple in May 2007. No kitchen, but I took an "immersion heater" and made my own coffee to enjoy on the tiny balcony. The owner has a vineyard and keeps a barrel of wine over his office desk!

You could try the Neli Studios - right alongside the cathedral and therefore easy to find, lovely people and a good renovation. http://www.nelistudios.com - we also found the prices very reasonable for the standard of accommodation. The area isn't quite as atmospheric as around Theotokopoulou, but you get a chance to watch all the weddings!
