Taxi Fares and things to do in Mauritius Posted: Tue January 1, 2008 01:01 AM UTC
Hi Guys
My partner and I are going to mauritius from 17th Feb-25th Feb 08 and are staying in the Grand Baie area.
I am a teacher and parents who from Mauritius have told me a taxi ride from the airport to the Grand Baie area should not cost any more than 1500 rupees, and this is an overcharged price(they pay anything less than this).
I wanted to know from experience what you guys think about this? is this correct? I understand that the local taxt drivers need to make a living but i dont want to be ripped off just because im a foreigner!
Also, my partner wants to do some shopping whilst we are there and he would like to know where the cheap factory outlets are - i also know that topshop clothes are made in Mauritius and would love to know where the factory is!
Any tips on eating out in the Grand Baie area too? or where to visit whilst we are there? Also how much spending money should we attempt to take? we dont have a disposable income so will be on a budget!
Sorry for the long posts guys
thanks in advance! x

Taxi fare is correct. But on the other things, you should check out www.islandinfo.mu
They have a free magazine at the airport too, Islandinfo - Mauritius In Your Hands. There is a factory shop in curepipe that you can check out but its quite far from grand bay, so if you are in the area take a look. Its La Bonne Foille - which translates to The Big Dig.
Again the website will give you lots of ideas, just goto the activities section, and please do not miss what i feel is the best thing in Mauritius.... The Cheetah cubs and the lions. The Lions are bigger now, but the Cheetahs are still babies.
Here is the 1 chance to ACTUALLY play with them. Not see them through a fence.

If you arrange for a taxi in advance you can maybe get for the price of 1500 rupees or a bit cheaper..but if you take a taxi from outside the airport on arrival its maybe even more expensive.. there is info for a taxi driver on my Mauritius page.

We used www.taximauritius.com when we were in Mauritius, they were excellent.
We set it all up by email, airport transfer and excursions, service first class. You can pay in euro, rupees or even in sterling, whatever suits you best. Just agree the price by email and keep a print off to take with you. We always tipped the driver in rupees.
Cheers,
Camimi
