Hi.to you all, I will be visiting Luxor for 7 days with my friend, and I was wondering is it possible to hire a private guide. Someone to give us good details about the history of the monuments without pushing for shopping etc etc.

Any good suggestions?

Definitely possible. When my wife and I went there last October, we hired a private English-speaking guide complete with a car and driver, and admission fees to the different sites. They took us to Luxor and Karnak temples, Valley of the Kings, Colossi of Memron and temple of Hapshepsut. This "standard" tour cost US$150 for the two of us. They also offered extras like a felucca (sailboat) ride, sound-&-light evening show at Karnak and a day tour to Abu Simbel.

The only shopping stop (which to me would be abnormal if there wasn't any) was at an alabaster store where they had demo of how alabaster figurines were made. But you are not pressured to buy anything and can just admire the displayed wares.

The Luxor guide was recommended by another guide in Cairo, but I believe you could just get one right at your hotel.

May be you can do it easily by yourself!! please check my tips about luxor city and cairo too,if you still feel you can't do it yourself so you can hire guide from trusted company like travelegyptnow with the rates that you determine from private tours section.

Hi Akeelah my husband and I were in Luxor for a week in Sep 06 we booked a number of things through one of the many travel agents in Luxor. This travel agent was highly recommended by many VT members and Trip Advisor members.We new what we wanted to do and just went to them and told them what we wanted and they arranged everything which included a vehicle,driver and escort. We went on a camel ride through the villages on the west bank (just the 2 of us plus guide ) hot air ballooning absolutely fantastic, and we flew to Cairo for the day to see the pyramids/museum etc fully escorted with our own guide. Each time we were picked up at our hotel and returned.They couldn't do enough for us and the cost was fantastic probably half what you would pay through your hotel. The name of the travel agency is Cheops Travel just next to the Winter Palace Hotel You really dont need to book anything in advance until you get there as you have a week and this will give you time to compare prices.

I have heard that Cheops Travel do balloon fliggts for £25-- is that correct?

We paid about 25 GBP for the hot air ballooning with Cheops can't tell you exactly as we were converting Egyptian pounds into Australian dollars. It also depends what time of the year you are traveling we were there in the low season (Summer) there is less demand at this time and you will get better prices than the high season.
