Help me plan my Bavaria trip
Posted: Mon December 31, 2007 06:49 AM UTC
Hello

me and my friend are going to Bavaria for about 7-8 days.

We are planing to stay 3 days in Munich and rest of the 5 days in some place in Bavaria. I would like to go to as many places as i could But since we only have 4-5 days ..places i would like to really go to are Rothenburg, Neuschwanstein castle. is it possible to do in 4 days? And what is the cheapest way to travel within Bavaria?

also i came across this website ...

http://www.sightseeingmunich.de/eng/rothenburg.html

They take day trips to famous locations in Bavaria in their buses. Has anybody tried them before? Looks like in about 49 Euros they take you in some city in bus and return you to Munich. Sounds like good deal if it covers ride fees + guide. But is it worth it? Or they rush too much?

thanks guys

When are you travelling ? Do you wish to see countryside, such as lakes and mountains, or are you wishing to see buildings and tour museums ? Are you looking for solitude, or a party until 5 AM ? Trains were always my preferred method of travel in Bavaria. Suggestions for visiting: Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Innsbruck,in Austria, Nuremburg, Bamberg, Rothenburg, Berchtesgaden, Neuschwanstein Castle, and the Lake Chiemsee Area, with the Herrenchiemsee Castle ( also a Ludwig II castle) just to name a few places. Thanks so much for your reply.

We are planing to go to first week of May. I dont really care too much for mountains or countryside but i rather like small towns and cities. No parties for us. I care for people watching, cafes, buildings, history etc.

I have another question. Can you travel with bavarian rail ticket to Austria ?? or there are some special tickets? what about coming back from Austria to Germany? can you use your bavarian tickets?

thanks

:)

I know that Salzburg is considered as both a German and Austrian station, but I'm not sure if the Bavaria Ticket is good there. abalada, or one of the resident VT train experts, will be able to tell you. Since you like history, but not necessarily mountains, Salzburg would probably be a better destination in Austria. It is easily accessible from Munich. Depending on what time you travel in May, Rothenburg and the castle could already be pretty busy. Bamberg and Nuremburg would also be pretty easy by train, as would Garmisch. Gary

I just noticed you are from Birmingham. I was in the Army and was in Huntsville for 2 years and Anniston for almost 4 years. Gary

Here a map which shows where the Bavaria Ticket is valid. You can travel to/from all stations shown on this map.
http://www.bayerntakt.de/media/PDF-Files/Netzkarten/Gesamtnetz07.pdf
In Austria:
- Salzburg Hbf
- Kufstein
- the Ausserfernbahn railway: Reutte and a few smaller stops not shown on this map

While the Bavaria Ticket covers inside Bavaria nearly all local public tranpsort, e.g. the buses from Füssen to Hohenschwangau or the U-Bahn (metro), trams and buses in Munich, this is not the case in places outside Bavaria. I.e. you can travel by regional trains to/from Salzburg Hbf, but the buses in Salzburg are not covered.

red lines: are served at least hourly
green lines: are served less frequently

For planning trips with the Bavaria Ticket use the DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
and select as means of transport "only local transport".

To move hotels only twice, just stay in 2 central cities like Munich and Nuremberg. Munich alone can occupy several days if you are into great museums and palaces. Nuremberg can certainly use at least a full day for its old city and documentation center. Then use the trains for day trips to Fussen, Dachau, Augsburg, Rothenburg ODT, etc. With the exception of the palaces where tickets are difficult to come by and perhaps Dachau where local guides are apparently not offered, most of these trips can be done without tour groups and their obligatory shopping stops, bad meals, and toilette stops.
