| Dallas | Dallas in Early February...advice for areas to stay Posted: Mon December 31, 2007 02:36 AM UTC
Hi, I am thinking of a 4-5 day trip to Dallas-Fort Worth in early February. I do want to see the JFK sites, but also like museums and art galleries. I do not know Dallas, and wonder what area of the city might be best to stay at: from the websites I have visited I think Downtown would be best for JFK related sites, but wonder if the Market Center area might be more economical for me...it is easy to get to downtown? Also the Galleria area sounds like it would have stuff of interest...again is it easy to get to downtown, and back? I would also like to visit the arts district of Forth Worth, esp, the Kimbell Art Museum...I assume that local buses make the trip to and from FW easy. I see a lot of hotels of decent prices in the Airport areas, but wonder if they are too far out to be practical. I do not want to rent a car. Being from Canada, any weather is better than Canada: is Feb. a wet month? I assume a light jacket will suffice.
Thanks to any and all for tips and advice. Jim Bertoia, Sparwood BC Canada |

ft. worth is pretty far from dallas---maybe 30 minutes? i don't live there, but they are their own cities, so i don't think there is bus service b/w the two. texas is a very car oriented place. you have to rent a car or might as well not go. yes, the galleria in dallas is easy to get to downtown, in a car. no idea about the bus service in dallas, but assuming its like in houston, it will take forever and you might be with a lot of undesirables. market square, if i remember correctly from my last work trip to dallas last month is right next to the jfk stuff.

Trust me rent a car. There is only limited bus service to get you to the places that you would want to go. It is possible to go from Dallas to Ft Worth on the train system called the "T" or "DART" (Dallas Area Rapid Transit" and bus service.
If you are staying in downtown Dallas near JFK sites you can get busses and taxis and ride the train back and forth to museums with little or no effort. and like I said you can get one train that will take you to downtown fort worh. However, I advise against trying to navigate the bus system to the Galleria. Rent a car and you can go on Yahoo maps and type in the address you want to go to and you will be able to get around very easy. You can always get a car with a GPS in it like from Hertz and that will work easy as well. A light jacket will do you well, but keep a small umbrella handy.

Jim, as Eve says, our cities (Dallas & Ft. Worth) are not made for public transit. The greater Dallas area does have a light rail system now which is convenient, but it is really geared to get commuters in and out of downtown.
The Market Center area isn't for you. If you rent a car, then you can stay a lot of places, although as you suspect, the airport hotels are cheaper because they are not near anything but the airport. If you really want to use mass transit, you might stay near the Mockingbird station, which is a trendy and lively area, but which also easily connects with DART into downtown (the JFK sites) as well as with Union Station, where you can take the aforementioned Trinity Express to Ft. Worth. But as both Monica and Eve said, we expect all visitors to have a rent car, and it just isn't easy without one... Bill
