Bergamo Travelling by train from Bergamo
Posted: Sat December 29, 2007 12:45 PM UTC
My wife and I will be staying in Bergamo during March 2008 and while we wish to see as much of Bergamo as possible, we would also like to take one or two rail journeys to view the surrounding area. Obviously, as we are staying in Bergamo for the week, we would wish to do a mid morning to early evening excursion.

Any ideas or advice would be much appreciated.

Best wishes for 2008.

Hello,

by train you can reach for example Milan where you can see a lot of interesting museums or doing shopping. If you book early enough you can see "the last supper".
Travelling by train you can also reach Lecco, a small city on the Como lake: they are wonderful places in spring if the weather is nice. You can also visit Brescia or even Verona but for this one the journey will be a little longer.
If you take a bus you can also reach interesting place in the valleys north Bergamo: San Pellegrino is an old fashioned town very famous in at the beginning of 1900 and full of liberty style buildings, surrounded by mountains. Clusone is also interesting because of its "danza macabra" (something like death dance), an ancient fresco quite famous in northern Italy. Clusone has also a very beautiful square with an ancient clock on a tower. In these places in the valleys you'll also experience very good typical food.

These are the first ideas I had, if I remember something more I'll let you know!

Best wishes to you too,
Sergio

Sergio,

many thanks for your most welcome advice regarding our trip to Bergamo.

We are flying from Glasgow (Prestwick) in Scotland and are due to get to the airport at 1700. How long will it take us (approximately), by train/bus to get to our hotel which is opposite the main Bergamo station?
Again many thanks and best wishes for 2008.

sincerely,

Tom Morrice

The airport is very close to the train station, it's 15 minutes by car, not more.
If you take the bus it will take approximately 30 minutes (even if they say 15minutes on the website...) to reach the train station. I think at that time buses are quite frequent. On the airport website (http://www.sacbo.it/Airpor/portalProcess.jsp?languageID=2)
they say the ticket costs 1,65 euros. The buses are orange and you have to take the number 1 to the train station (STAZIONE FS).
The airport is quite small, you'll not get lost.

Hi Sergio,

here I am to bother you again.

Can you tell me if it would be possible to take a train from Bergamo to the town at the southern end of Lake Garda (English spelling I'm afraid), take a trip on a steamer on the lake and be back in Bergamo by train in the late evening?
Or do you think it would be neceaasry to stay overnight, away from Bergamo
This would be in mid April.

Again many thanks for your help. Hope all goes well with you.

I think you can be back in Bergamo at night. You can reach Peschiera (if that's the the place you meant) in about 2 hours by train (changing the train once).
You can also reach Sirmione by train (it on the same direction, earlier than Peschiera)
In Peschiera and in Sirmione you'll find ferries, but I have no idea about steamer... you can check the train website to find a suitable schedule:
http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html
Let me know if you can plan everything and which is the actual town you're going to.

Thank you Sergio,

I will look at the options and discuss it with my wife.

We are keen to see as much of the surrounding area as possible without missing the undoubted attractions of Bergamo, therefore I would like to have an idea of how each day will be spent.

Again, many thanks.Weather quite cold here, but in Ayrshire, we do not get the extremes of climate they experience in other parts of Scotland, apart from the Atlantic gales!!!

You can also reach Cremona (lovely small town, wonderful torrone) by train from Bergamo!! ... and Parma, Modena, Bologna, Firenze, Rome!! Direct "fast" train leaving from Bergamo every day at 6.16 am and back by 10.30 pm.
About your hotel, if it is Piemontese, it's 2-3 minutes from train and bus station; same for bus stop to and from airport.

Hi,

many thanks for your advice. I must sit down and plan some sort of daily itinerary. We want to see as much of Bergamo as possible, but would also like to visit other places of interest and beauty. Unfortunately, in the relatively short time we will be in Italy, we shall have to omit many places we would like to see. However, what we don't see this time, we shall include at a future date.

Again, many thanks.
