| Kyrgyzstan | Torugart Pass: exciting overland route to China Posted: Sat December 29, 2007 01:16 AM UTC
Interesting. This should be the exact passage Lady Catherine Macartney first made her trip from London to Kashgar vividly detailed in her "An English Lady in Chinese Turkestan"!
In addition to 4WD, there should be lot of trucks over A172 and A371 between Kashagr and Osh. Have you seen any pack animal and/or caravan en-route, as well as nomad crossing the border? Were they being checked by either custom or border guards?! Regards, JH |

I went over the Torugart pass from Kashgar to Naryn in July. We were in a 4WD. The traffic coming the other way was mostly lorries/trucks - I didn't see any nomads, but the weather was appalling (snow, fog), so couldn't really see much at all!

I am from Osh. And I can exactly say that there aren't any caravans or pack animal. Nomads already had changed pack animals to cars. So they moves by cars. It is very hard to find nomads on their pack animals. However some people prefer it.
