Mexico City Hotels in Mexico City
Posted: Fri December 28, 2007 03:18 PM UTC
I need some help on hotels in Mexico City.
We're looking at a few options advertised for under $100 nightly:
-- Suites Contempo. Advertised as Near Chapultepec Forest, between Reforma and Mariano Escobedo Streets. In the best hotel zone of the capital.
-- Emporio Reforma. This downtown Mexico City hotel is on Paseo de la Reforma, three km (two miles) from Zocalo Square, five km (three miles) from the Anthropology Museum, and 45 minutes from the international airport.
-- Casa Gonzalez. Río Lerma and Río Panuco, Zona Rosa & Surrounding Areas.
-- Casa de la Condesa. Avenida Reforma and Avenida Insurgentes, Av. Cuahutemoc, Av. Revolucion, and Av. Viaducto, the main avenues of Mexico City.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Thanks for the quick response!

Is the area around the Emporia Reforma good for restaurants. Can you walk?

I was looking at the Suites Contempo because it looked like such a nice facility, with kitchenettes. But I couldn't tell whether there are any restaurants nearby.

We're going to be spending one week in Mexico -- Saturday to Saturday -- arriving and departing from Mexico City.

We thought we spend four days in Mexico City and the other three in Cuernavaca and Taxco.

Does that make sense as an itinerary or are there other nearby cities that are better to visit?

Thanks again for the advice.

I don't know when you are going - my wife and I will be visiting Mexico City and Taxco and Malinalco in February and plan to stay at the Red Tree House in Mexico City - check out their website - looks and sounds wonderful , in Condesa near lots of restaurants, nice part of town. Do you live in Portland OR or ME? We live in Washougal WA.

I always stay really close to Emporio at a cheaper place, it is a great location and a pretty looking hotel, really the others are also well located. I've heard nice things about Casa Gonzalez and you will get some more personalized opinions about things to see & do. Your suites place is near many pricey restaurants in Polanco, you have more variety at the other places, the condesa is a nice hip neighborhood, lots of nightlife and feel for what "real life" is like for contemporary normals in DF. However Emporio & Gonzales you are strategically positioned between Centro Historico and Polanco/Chapultepec, walking distance to centro/Alameda. Mexico DF is a geographically huge city, the metro at 2 pesos a trip is convenient, fast and I have no idea why people who have ever been to new york or any other big city would think its unsafe ... use normal city precaution. You can go to and from airport and bus terminals on the metro.

As for your itinerary, Cuernavaca is now a huge city also although it is very interesting, Morelos is warmer than Mexico State and has great balnearios (swimming pool type places) nearby, Taxco is smaller, cute in the mountains. In DF You are near tons of interesting cities -places very accessible by bus are Tlaxcala & Pachuca in the eastern direction if you like cleaner air & less conventional tourist crap, also Queretaro to the north is both historic and a glimpse of the success story happening in Mexico now with lots of foreign investment, great museums downtown. Have a great trip!

Without knowing what you intend to do when in the city, it's not easy to make a recommendation or comment about your hotel possibilities. The Red Tree House is relatively new and has received very high marks in reviews I'm reading from the guests who've gone online to comment. The Emporio's also a good property. More details will help you get responses more "on point."
