| San Diego | Thomas Jefferson Law School Housing Posted: Wed December 26, 2007 04:10 PM UTC
Can anyone give me the names of the neighborhoods near Thomas Jefferson law school? Or any advice about the areas near by? What to steer clear of, etc?
Thanks! |

TJLS is at the base of a hill. The hill slopes up to the east and is part of a neighborhood known as 'Mission Hills'. If TJLS is at the center of a clock, Mission Hills stretches from 12 to 4.( The old Spanish mission from which the name derives is at the far north end of Mission Hills, near I8, FWIW )
Mission Hills is mostly upper middle class residential. The northern end can be quite pricey, the southern end more modest. Many homes have ocean views. Overall it is a fine place to live. ( Check out my homepage for a description. ) If you go about a mile due east though Mission Hills, you will be in the Hillcrest neighborhood. Hillcrest is San Diego's version of Greenwich Village: artsy, hip, gay-friendly, gentrifying. It has great food, great bookstores, lots of shopping, lots of lofts and apartments. Northward along the eastern edge of the I5 freeway ( about 11:30 ) is Old Town. It is a touristy place, has several good restaurants and a theater and some overpriced tourist shopping. When you cross the freeway, things change. At about 9:00-10:00 is the Sports arena / Midway area. It has some working-class housing, lots of low end strip malls, and a few big box stores. I only visit there when buying hardware or tires. If you go though that, about 2 miles to the west, you hit Ocean Beach. It is a haven for old hippies. Most of the residents are too stoned to have noticed that the Beatles broke up, Jerry Rubin went to work on Wall Street, and paisley bellbottoms are no longer the height of fashion. It is mostly residential and has some quaint shopping. ( If you go there, be kind to the natives - don't tell them about the Beatles. ) And completing the round-the-clock scan: from 5:00-8:30 is the airport. I'm assuming that you are planning to go to law school and are looking for a place to live. If you are a stoner or a surfer, go to Ocean Beach. If you are gay, go to Hillcrest. If none of the above, go to Mission Hills, as far northward as your budget will allow. Welcome to San Diego HB

HB has given a good description of the neighborhoods that surround the Thomas Jefferson School of Law. I'll offer a map of the various areas of San Diego. TJSL is located in the Western section.
http://www.sandiego.gov/neighborhoods-map/index.shtml None of the neighborhoods near, would automatically "send out a warning signal" but when you find a rental considered "affordable" for a student, it may be substandard for the area. Once you are considering a place, you might give us the street name and section and maybe we could be more helpful in a specific way.
