| Salzburg | Salzburg Posted: Wed December 26, 2007 05:53 AM UTC
We would be spending around 5-6 days in Salzburg.
Please help me with these queries: 1) How to travel from Salzburg to Hallstatt? and how much time does it take? 2) What would be the approximate cost of travel for two people to Hallstatt from Salzburg? 3) Any recomendation for day trips from Salzburg? 4) What would be the travel duration from Vienna to Salzburg? and how much would be the aproximate travel cost for two people? Cheers |

1) I think the most economic way to get there is, to use the rail connection between Salzburg and Hallstatt (via Attnang-Puchheim). There is normally a train from Salzburg to Attnang-Puchheim every 2 hours and from there you take a regional train to Hallstatt. Total travelling time is approx. 2 hours 40 minutes. You could also rent a car and drive down through the Gosau area. It is probably more expensive, but the beauty of that area is simply breathtaking.
2) The economy class one-way ticket from Salzburg to Hallstatt costs 21.60 Euros per person (according to the website of Austrian Railways). So the total return ticket for two persons would be 86.40 Euros. 3) I think Hallstatt is a very good choice for a trip out of Salzburg for one or two days. Other than that I'd recommend to do a tour of the whole Salzkammergut. 4) Vienna to Salzburg normally takes around 3 hours by train. There is an express train that does the journey in 2 hours 47 minutes because it only stops on 3 stations between Vienna and Salzburg. Vienna-Salzburg by train would cost you 44.20 Euros per person (one-way), ie 176.80 Euros for both of you both ways.

Your only two hours by train from Munich in Germany. Lots to see there and easy to navigate using public transport. A day trip is possible but a one night stay (leaving any big bags you have in locker storage at your salzburg accomodation) would be better.

Thanks a ton for your revert.
Since our trip would be Vienna to Salzburg to Hallstatt and finally back to Vienna. In this case ,are there any direct connections back to Vienna from Hallstatt or we will have to return to Salzburg and then return to Vienna?

As I wrote in my previous message there is no direct train connection between Hallstatt and Salzburg either. You have to change trains in Attnang-Puchheim.
So in order to go from Hallstatt to Vienna you have to do that as well. Take the regional train from Hallstatt to Attnang-Puchheim and then from there you take the regular train from Attnang-Puchheim to Vienna. Total travelling time is between 3 3/4 hours and 4 1/2 hours because there are different waiting times in Attnang-Puchheim depending on the timing of your train.

A good day trip from Salzburg is Werfen, which is a small village south of Salzburg. Things to see in Werfen include the Hohenwerfen Fortress and the Eisriesenwelt Höhle (Giant Ice Caves). There is a direct train from Salzburg to Werfen. You can check the schedule at

Only attempt Werfen ice caves if you're really really fit - It's higher than the Jungfrau! There is a 20 minute walk from the car park followed by a biscuit tin of a cable car and then another 20 minute walk to the caves. - See my warnings on VT page
Do go to the 6.15 pm service at Noonberg Abbey which is delightful and is where Maria in Sound of Music took her vows as a novice Avoid Mozarts birth place in Salzburg - rip off. Do take the river boat down the Salsch river - there's plenty to see in Salzburg - eat in Cafe Mozart. Hellebrun Palace is good fun

Visit Berchtesgaden and St. Bartoloma. It's between 20-30 minutes from Salzburg and is absolutely stunning.
