| Salzburg | Bus / Coach Travel to Munich Posted: Mon December 24, 2007 06:48 AM UTC
I will be in Berchtesgaden in Germany and travel back via Munich on 9th January.
Train Drivers in Deutsch Bahn have give notice of a strike from 7th. So my pre purchased rail ticker may be of little use. Can anyone give information of Bus/Coach transport from Salzburg (Airport or City Centre) to Munich (Again Airport or City Centre). Info with web addresses wound be especially helpful. I feel a contingency plan rather than panic on the 8th might make a better end to our holiday |

A link for the car rental options at the Salzburg Airport can be found at: http://engl.salzburg-airport.com/anreise_836.html. Gary

I wish people would not respond suggesting car hire when the questioner has specifically asked about public transport!! Even if people can drive they may not be authorized to do so, or feel capable of it in the place they are going to and/or may (like me) simply prefer public transport - and car-hire is rarely a cost-effective choice for one person anyway (even if this question says "our holiday", which may change things).
Buses from Salzburg to Munich generally depart from Südtirolerplatz outside the railway station (there is a shuttle bus from Salzburg airport to the same place). Unfortunately Busabout only does it between May and October, while Eurolines/Europabus leaves all year round (from Lastenstr. 12 BEHIND the station) at 11.30 arr. Munich 13.45 but only on Tuesday and Saturdays - also, Eurolines is run in Germany by German Railways so I don't know how this affects things. In France and Belgium when there is a train strike, private coach operators operate from in front of stations, don't know whether this is also the case in Germany. For German Eurolines/Europabus information see www.touring.de (then West and Central Europe) or phone (Munich) 089 8898 89513. Good luck, and I hope this problem does not spoil your holiday!

I agree with you on the car rental issue. I only mentioned that the rentals are available as sort of a back-up plan for a back-up plan. Hopefully Lufthansa will have additional busses on hand if a strike does become a reality. Gary

Previous strikes in Germany never led to a complete cancellation of all trains. Usually the railways publish the day before which trains will run. Trains might be fuller than usual, but usually all majore destinations are served.
Also there might not be a strike at all. The trade unions have just told the railway they won't strike until the 6th, and might strike afterwards. But that is not sure. I would suggest the following: - Check the day before if the train you booked will be running. - If your train is not running, check if others are running. Even if your ticket is only valid for a particular train (uncommon in Germany) you are entitled to transportation on any other train going from Salzburg to Munich if your booked train doesn't run. - If no train will be running (unlikely) get a refund on you ticket and take a coach.
