Don't worry. A ticket entitles you to ride even if all the seats are full (unlikely unless you travel on a major holiday). There is always room in the corridor or on the folding seats at the ends of the carriages, and the trip isn't so long that such a situation would be unbearable.
You can buy tickets right up until departure time, and if you miss one train there will be another along later.

You can buy your ticket at the ticket counter for an IC train. No need for advance reservations.
Only for TGV you need reservations. But this train on the route Brussels-Amsterdam is only 6 minutes faster on a 2hr50 ride. The price for a one-way ticket will be approx. 35 euro for the IC train and 70 euro for a return trip. For the Thalys it's slightly more (return trip 74 euro). http://www.nshispeed.nl/en : for schedules and prices or via the Belgian rail website (only schedules): http://www.b-rail.be/int/E/

Hi Anke, I also will be in Brussels (first week of Sept'08) and would be interested in doing day trips by train, leave by 8am and return by say 8pm. Can you offer some suggestions for Netherlands, Germany or Luxembourg.
Appreciate any suggestions, Mike

Although I could recommend plenty in The Netherlands, fairness compels me to encourage you to explore Belgium a bit further. Go to the east (the Ardennes region), you can find plenty of recommendations on places there right here on VT. There's of course Brugge, Gent, and Antwerp as well.
Or even try Luxembourg city which is wonderful. For Germany : Aachen, and a bit further Koblenz, Heidelberg. For The Netherlands: Bergen-op-Zoom or Breda would be my nearest suggestions.

Oops, you said day trips. Well then, leave out Koblenz and Heidelberg :-)

Hi Anke, Thank you for your suggestions, I will research them over the next few days. We had an overnight stay in Hieldburg in 1993, a beautiful Castle etc.Aachen is on my list as well as Brugge so I think we will look at Netherlands or Luxembourg.

Let me add 's Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch) to that list in The Netherlands. Lovely town.
