Zermatt Apres-ski in Zermatt

Hello everyone,

I just need some tips about Zermatt. I hear so many great things and I'm planning on being there during the 1st week of March. However, I was informed that it takes forever to get to the main lifts in the morning (around 40-45 minutes)and another 40 or so minutes on the way back (in the evenings) and that there is extensive walking to be done while wearing ski boots, is this true? I also heard that it's not always easy to ski down to Cervinia (IT) due to the long lift lines.

Thanks

Murat

I went to Zermatt in January a few years back. I don't recall any major lines or delays in getting up the mountain to get on the slopes. It is quite a long ride from the town to the ski area, but we skied most of the way down. Granted that there was not a lot of fresh snow, we had no problem skiing to Cervinia, but we made sure we got the Cervinia ski pass when we got our main pass so we we could just get in line. Some of the walks on the lifts seemed a bit burdensome, but these were only a few lifts and it was walking up and down steps. I would go back in a heartbeat. Karl

I do not ski but I hike frequently in Zermatt. With regards to walking. You will originally depart from Furi to get the lift up. This is on the outskirts of Town. It is at the beginning of an area called Winkelmatten. If you stay in this area, you will have little walking to do in town. Another option is to take an electric bus. There is a free ski bus, but you need to be close to one of the stops so you are not walking to far. There is one right near the train station. The advantage of being in the middle of town is that it offers you more entertainment options. The buses do not run at night so you would need to walk into town. A lot depends on the weather in that situation. Good Luck.

Correction. The lift begins in Winkelmatten. There is a stop/or change at Furi on the way up to your destination. Sorry for the confusion
