| New Mexico | What is the Best Place to learn to Ski? Posted: Fri December 21, 2007 10:33 PM UTC
Recently transplanted from the NorthEast, we now live in Oklahoma City. We'd like our 2 children (8&9) to learn to ski. Where should we go? I've read about Angel Fire, Taos, and Red River, until I'm thoroughly confused. Please help - and thank you!

The answer is ... where you find a great instructor or two that your kids really like! Snow is snow ... and all ski schools say "We are the best" yada yada yada ... but when my 4 kids, all grown now and great skiers, responded best to instructors they truly enjoyed. Finding the best ones can be tough, so you just have to ask the locals or people who already go to that particular slope a lot. The fact that you are looking at the relatively smaller resorts can be a plus, though. Smaller groups and not so rushed and intimidating. If you have plenty of money, you might even want to hire a private lesson for them. But you can usually find groups of no more than ten -- and that is something I would ask about. 6-8 are great ... more than 10 with one instructor and they just don't get much personal attention.

You might also look at some of the Colorado resorts. Gary

You've also got Ski Apache in Ruidoso, although I guess that's slightly further.
Taos is supposed to be pretty nice, but Red River has more options. Not sure about Angel Fire.

our family likes Angle fire and Red River. Red River is smaller and cheaper. Angle fire has more choices. We usually buy 1 day passes and go to both. Red River to learn and then Angel fire to test your skills. It is nice to have variety. And you want to keep the options open because of the crowds. sometimes angel fire just gets too crowded and it takes forever to wait for a lift not to mention getting run over by snow boarders.
Taos is farther away and we just stay between red river and angel fire. jamie langston
