| San Diego | Visiting California Posted: Sat December 15, 2007 02:14 PM UTC
Hey there, just after some advice. I'll be flying into San Diego with the plan of visiting Mexico. Anyone give me some advice on where to visit in Mexico, other than the obvious border towns. I'm planning on staying 2 weeks, hoping to spend most that time in Mexico, so any advice on places to stay and where to avoid?

Are you planning on driving?
A lot of Americans head to Rosarito. There's a cruise there that leaves, I think, at least once daily from Downtown San Diego. Cabo San Lucas is also supposed to nice. But that would really require an additional flight.

I think I would just visit Cabo San Lucas, and, maybe, as the other poster suggested, take a cruise along the coastline. You might look at the Cabo San Lucas and Baja California travel forums and pages here on VT. Gary

Well I'm meeting up with 2 friends who are currently travelling, with US being their last stop. We're gonna want to keep it as cheap as possible, hence heading into Mexico, how much will the cruise cost. I probably want to see LAX and San Diego also so will probably stay in US for a few nights.
Not sure if I'm going right way about things by staying in Mexico, but just want things kept as cheap as possible, any suggestions welcome.

If you are on a budget Cabo San Lucas is probably not a very good option, but I'll check on something that might still be available. When do you plan to be in southern California/Mexico ?

For lodging, take a look at the following website: http://www.hostelworld.com. For cheap bus connections: http://www.megabus.com/us. Gary

its not going to be until May, so I've plenty of time to sort sort things out. Just been looking at driving down to Cabo, which sounds like it would be an expereince, not sure if a rental company would provide a car for it though, the 24 hr bus journey doesn't sound all that appealing.
Thanks very much for you help though just names of possible places is of great help because my geography of the area isn't the best.

American rental cars companies in southern California do not want to rent cars to people who are taking them to Mexico. There is usually something in the contract, the fine print, mentioning this.

If you are planning to rent a car to go into Mexico, you might consider renting the car from Tijuana. I know of a place in SD that will rent cars that are allowed into Mexico and the cost is about $30.00 per day. They have weekly rates, but I think there will be no reduction for the daily insurance rate which is about $15.00 per day.
On my Tijuana page I have listed car rental places on the Transportation Tips section. I'm not sure if thier rates would be less than the US car rental company, but the advantage would be if you had any car trouble the Mexican rental would be easier to negotiate while in Mexico. Also, I'd say that Cabo San Lucas isn't less touristy than Rosarito Beach, but if you have a week or more it might be interesting to see Tijuana, Rosarito Beach and Ensenada in an "off the beaten path" mannar. There are plenty of things to see at each of these cities that are rarely seen by the typical tourists and much of it very different from the basic tourist path.
