Warsaw How to get to the old center from the airport
Posted: Sat December 15, 2007 08:43 AM UTC
Hello all VT-Warsawians,
In January I will be in Warsaw for three days, attending to a tradefare in a airport hotel. Now, I know there will be only little time, but I definately want to catch a glimbs of the old city center of this historical town. Can anyone recommend me the best way to go there. Are there busservices, tramways or is a taxi the best option? What is the price of a taxi ride to the centre? Could it be better to take a taxi to a nearby metro-station to travel on by subway?
In advance my gratitude to everyone that hands me some suggestions!
Greetings from Arnhem, NL,
Paul

The #175 bus goes from the airport and the old town is on its route. A journey time of about 25/30 minutes. You can purchase bus tickets at the airport or possibly the hotel.

Bus 175 is definitely the best to get to the Old Town and the historic centre of Warsaw. You will have to go all the way to the other terminus in Pl. Pilsudskiego so won't miss your stop. Just keep your passport, money etc. in a safe place as this bus route is notorious for pickpockets, but if you leave your luggage at the hotel, they won't know you are a tourist and should leave you in peace.

I don't suppose he wants to see the skyscrapers around the Palace of Culture but rather what used to be the centre, even if a lot of it was reconstructed after the war - the Old Town, the Royal Palace, the churches and palaces of Krakowskie Przedmiescie.

Hello,

Thank you all so far. Bus number 175 is printed in my mind now and I will try this connection when possible.

Pieter Jan, as being a quite old VT-member, your suggestion already had been done some weeks ago. Busnumbers and routes change, therefore I needed up to date information. Thanks anyway.

Still my question about what the taxi fare costs from the airport to the old city centre. Could anyone tell me an estimate?

Referring to the "old city centre" I mean the place that has been completely restored in old style after the war damages that have been done. The atmosphere remains old and historically seen here's where Warsaw started out to become the present Polish capitol.

Thanks again to you all, I'm already looking out to this trip.

I can't tell you the price of the taxi, especially that nowadays they often stand in traffic jams together with buses so that you have to pay for the time wasted in this way, but here's a word of advice. Go to the stand of SAWA TAXI at the airport and order a taxi from them, asking about the price in advance. This is a firm specialising in transport to and from the airport. A VT-er from Edinburgh used it recently and was very satisfied with their services. Don't get into any taxi or you may be ripped off.

The price during the day (until 10pm.) should not exceed EUR 7-8, and EUR 12-14 during the night or weekend. This is a very rough estimation, as - like my colleague mentioned - its hard to give a precise data. Taxis are easily available on the airport, and I heard that they no longer rip off the tourists :) Still I think the bus will take only some time more.
Good luck with your trip!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
You are all very helpful and I am getting more and more anxious to use my time in Warszawa as intensive as possible. It's a pitty the days are now so short (in daylight time I mean).
Can anyone tell me in addition to my former questions, whether it is sensible to walk to Metra Wilanowska? It looks like less then two kilometers from the hotel we are in.
Close to the hotel I discovered on the map, that there is a trainstation "Warszawa Sluzewiec". Are there any connections that could bring me to "Warszawa Centralna"? Could these connection be helpful to a swift connection to the city centre?

Paul

Metro Wilanowska is much farther from the airport than you think and the underground will not take you close to the historic centre of Warsaw. The station Warszawa Sluzewiec is an even worse idea. First of all, it's hard to find the way to it. The trains stop there only about once in two hours, there is no ticket-office at the station so you would have to look for the conductor. Bus 175 goes by the station Warszawa Centralna, passes the Palace of Culture and the skyscrapers so you can see the new centre of Warsaw on the way. I see you like experimenting but it will mean a waste of time. The area around the airport is far from attractive, not worth wasting your time on.
