| Eindhoven | Brussels to Eindhoven Posted: Sat December 15, 2007 06:59 AM UTC
Hi,
I'm reaching Brussels airport at 8.30 am and need to travel to Eindhoven. Could someone advise what the best way and how much it would cost approximately? |

hi there. Train...
http://www.b-rail.be/int/E/ It doesn't say what it costs. The bit from the Dutch border to The Netherlands should be about 15 euro or so (via Maastricht). The route can go via Maastricht, Breda or Rotterdam, but all the travel time is about the same (2.5 hours).

Here is your virtual train ticket. Print it out and take it to the SNCB ticket counter at Brussels airport. You pay there. It is valid on most trains, but ask regarding validity for EC/IC trains, they may need a small surcharge.

I don't see the difference in having this picture of 'a' train ticket or simply showing up at the counter in Brussels and saying where you want to go, then buy the ticket.
But still interesting that a price shows up, even though it is an estimate, whereas the Belgian train website does not do pricing for international train travel (even if it is just over the border). Btw... Dutch rail website doesn't either.

The ticket is via Roosendaal-Breda obviously. I did not pay attention to Anke-Thea comment, sorry.
Here is the same ticket via Vise-Maastricht, it's 34 Euro, 6 Euro more than the one via Roosendaal: http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/8155/bruvisejt7.png

@Anke-Thea: the difference is the routing and providing the magic numbers you see underneath of the ticket (these are called "Section"). So in last sample, the operator would know not "Brussels Airport to Eindhoven" but: SNCB Section #7920 plus NS Section #48320. That usually avoids mistakes.

There is only one Eindhoven... and you would already know where you are (and so does the ticketsales person) when you're actually on the station of departure.
So making a mistake is quite difficult! Anyhow, the price of around 30 euro for a one-way ticket should be about correct. Any of the 3 routes (via Rotterdam, via Roosendaal/Breda and via Maastricht) take almost equal amount of time.

Anke, I also have a little bit hidden agenda: demonstrating how the European TCV fare databese and it's front-end ("jizdenka") does work. It would be really cool if anyone could use it. The prices are not "estimated" - they are in the case of most West European railroads exact on Cent. The possible EC/IC surcharge (usually 3 Euro) is not included.
Here is how you would use the jizdenka: - first see the map itself. You will need a good map, Bükkes covered the entire Europe + all Russia and it's monthly updated. B+NL+L is here: http://www.bueker.net/trainspotting/map.php?file=m - second, launch the www.jizenka.cz (it's just merely a front-end based in Prague, but it does not matter). Switch to English and switch to "international". - third, choose the departure/arrival cities. That is somewhat you have to get used to but ultimately it's easy. - fourth, the tricky part: you have to look at the map and verify the routing. If you like it, leave alone. If not, chose the "via" section and click on different routes. In most cases it's not very tough. Fun begins if you like to go from Brussel to, say, Nowy Sacz via Augsburg and Dresden. Still possible - as you see.... :-) http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/5820/testth6.png (and here is also obvious, why these "magic" numbers are so important) Try yourself and play with different cities - it's quite fun! BTW: as you see from the map, the route via Rotterdam is actually pretty long and it's the same as via Rosendaal - just goes further. It's useful only if there is an IC/EC which provides the best connection that way. Otherwise Brussel-Roosendaal-Breda-Eindhoven is much shorter. I was pretty lazy not looking up the schedules, so maybe that would be the best, I do not know. The question is relatively simple, I just use it as an excuse to demonstrate the capabilities of the TCV database and it's front-end, so hope everyone can use it.

Thanks for the info. I'll try it out sometime.
I know via Rotterdam is longer. I live here, remember :-) However with trains it's not only the route but also the number of stops and the train speed. That's why in this case all 3 routes take equal time.
