Milford Sound Fjordlands National Park
Posted: Fri December 14, 2007 12:57 PM UTC
I am a bit confused here. Its mainly VT who is at fault. Milford Sound is not really a destination unto itself, its a part of the Fjordlands National Park. Looking for general info on the park as a whole. Including tips on tours, accomodations and something on those mischeivous Keas. Can anyone help?

Hiya Miki. If I drove, that would solve many problems. However, I dont drive (failed roadtest and never did retake it). So, need to be on a tour, either a day tour or longer. I feel though a day tour would not do the area justice. If you can recommend a tour company that does the region, that would be perfect.

I recommend reading through the Milford Track itinerary on wikitravel.org. It cleared up a lot of confusion for me.

Real Journeys offers it all:

www.realjourneys.co.nz

You could also make the trip on one of those buses, like Kiwi Experience and Intercity, etc.

A friend of mine was in Fiordland last week. She says there are always people with cars at backpacker hostels, and they give other backpackers a ride. So if you would make it to Te Anau perhaps you would meet someone with a car? And if not, just book a tour from Te Anau.

You will meet keas at most car parks. For more info I recommend my kea travelogues on my South Island page:

If you want to know anything about nature (animals and plants), national parks, walking/hiking tracks, etc. you find a lot of information on the website of the Department of Conservation:

Thanks. I will look. I also saw that in my book published by Insight Guides on Rain Forests, there is a chapter on Fjordlands.

Sissi's links are the best. I would be very careful what I read on wikipedia, as to how uptodate it is.
Where do you plan to base yourself for the visit to Fiordland National Park? Will you also go to Aspiring National Park, as there is often crossover.
Nothing like looking at a good oldfashioned map :-)
