| Cayo Guillermo | cayo guillermo, santa maria or cayo largo??? Posted: Tue September 16, 2003 10:10 PM UTC
My question is in the title, I have to decide which destination i should go. In cayo guillermo, i would stay at the sol cayo guillermo, in cayo santa maria at the sol cayo santa maria and in cayo largo, at the pelican.
If someone could help me, i would appreciate it . The hotel is more or less important for me, i want an amazing beach with turquoise water and white sand. I'm 21 years old, so i don't want a place for families, i want to be able to walk a lot and find precious spots on the beach where i can be alone or almost. Some people told me the cayo largo would be better for me because it's very quiet and you can take some long walks and discover virgin beaches, but i'm a little bit afraid because of the ouragan michelle that destryed a big part of it in 2001 and also because of the price. So now i'm looking if cayo guillermo or cayo santa maria could correspond to what i am looking for. Don't remember that i want an honest answer and that finally, i want the most beautiful beach. Thank you! bebye |

I've stayed at Cayo Coco but visisted over a Cayo Guillermo for a couple of days. The very nicest looking resort at Guillermo is the Melia, but it's right next door to the Sol. You would not be disappointed in the beach there. To the west of the resorts are long stretches of deserted beach. As for Santa Maria, I haven't been there yet, but it is pretty high on my list of places to go soon. The reviews that I've read describe the beach as awesome, although there doesn't seem to be much in the way of picturesque trees in the background in many of the pictures that I see. Being the only resort on an otherwise deserted island, Santa Maria would give you the solitude that you might like.
Good reviews of all the Cuban resorts can be read on debbiescaribbeanresortreviews.com, and there are tons of pictures on community.webshots.com if you use their search. Another two I like are cayosantamaria.info and cayolargo.net Enjoy Brian

If you want a bit more activity, go to CG or CS. Cayo Largo is very quiet and remote with unbelievable white sand beaches that stretch for miles and miles. Not much else to do but a lot of relaxation. We love it!!! They have great diving and snorkeling there also. My advice would be that you, as a 21 y/o single, may find it a bit boring. If you do go to CL, however, stay at the Sol Club Cayo Largo, not the Pelicano, as it is more geared towards children. Hurricane Michelle was a couple of years ago so there is no need to be afraid of it. As the previous poster said, check out the cayolargo.net site. LOTS of info there.

Hi,
If what you want is the best beach -- white sand and turquoise waters -- you should absolutely go to Cayo Largo. Your second respondent "thinkinginq" is also right that you should stay at the Sol Club Cayo Largo. I've stayed at both it and Pelicano, and Sol Club is MUCH better. It's at the end of the hotel strip and you can walk forever from there -- literally for miles and miles and hours and hours. the food at Sol Club is also some of the best in Cuba. (As a rule, go to Melia/Sol hotels in Cuba.) I was in Cayo Largo this December and, again, WOW! Sol Club Cayo Guillermo is also a good place, though, with a fine beach. Actually, I prefer it to Melia Cayo Guillermo -- Melia C.G. has a lot of grasses in front of it in the water, though the food and facilities are a bit better. I'm going back for two weeks February 7 - 21 on account of a great last-minute deal, but I have to admit that the beaches are nowhgere near as deep as at Cayo Largo. The advantage of Sol Club Cayo Santa Maria is that it's one of only two hotels on the Cayo. The other, Melia C.S.M. is still partially under construction; it's got a higher rating, but stay at the Sol Club which is more established with vegetation and plantings. the beach strip is quite extensive, although not as FOREVER as at Cayo Largo; there can also be a slightly greater chance of problems with no-see-ums (mosquitos). I don't know if this mattrers to you, but Cayo Largo has clothing optional sections at most hotels and along most of the beach walks. About 15% of the clientelle are naturalists. Not gawking, very relaxed natual atmosphere. There is also a small naturist section at Cayo Sanata Maria. NONE at Cayo Guillermo, although if you walk east from the Sol Club Cayo Guillermo there's no other hotel, just beach, and you'd have lots of privacy for a skinny dip. Have a great trip. Cheers, Allan
