Antwerp Areas to Avoid In Antwerp
Posted: Tue December 11, 2007 10:34 PM UTC
Hi,

Im currently looking for accomodation in antwerp and have found a place located on Leguit . However have found that this area is a red light district (http://www.jmu.edu/pubsafety/RightToKnow/AntwerpCampus2007.shtml).

Could anyone tell me whether that is true, and whether that is an unsafe place to live.

Thanks

It's a very long text at the link you're giving. What is it that you want to share about it?

Your accommodation at Leguit is only 1 km from Antwerp Hall, which seems to be the regular accommodation for your semester abroad.

IMHO it's just the usual hoax, people being scared on the other side of the ocean.

Looking at the link:

http://www.jmu.edu/pubsafety/RightToKnow/AntwerpCampus2007.shtml

It is obvious, where is comes from:

http://www.jmu.edu

It's really sad, people bite into that "safety hoax". Believe or not, yesterday it was Taipei on the row how "unsafe" it can be.

The biggest issues in Asia and Europe is the petty crime (pick-pocket, currency swindle) and car break-in/theft. The usual prevention is to put the wallet into better place, blend in with locals, never change money on the street, never leave anything in the car which would attract attention and buy/rent an car which has low appeal for thieves.

As for safety... precisely the owners/employees of the red light establishments are interested the most to keep the area reasonably safe. Otherwise no business. Of course no one is forced to visit a red light establishment and engage in a brawl.

According to our own Antwerpen VT page

http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/Belgium/Provincie_Antwerpen/Antwerp-358974/Warnings_or_Dangers-Antwerp-places_better_to_avoid_at_night-R-1.html

the most dangerous place is around the Central Station.
RLD is on the second place.

Personally I think the more you get to the harbours (up North) the more East European truckers you see hanging around.

Better write VT member irisbe an email; she is our Antwerp expert.

leguit is at the side of the Red light district.
If you don't take offence of pple behind windows offering themselfs... I guess it is ok.
You will not be far away from the new marina harbour, a very nice place in summer these days, you will not be far away from the university campus and from the little square named Stadswaag.

How did you got to the address? is it private or is it by intermediation of an agency or highschool/university?

p.s. the Leguit is not a bad little local pub. It was on our first VT pubcrawl and we had a lovely time there :)
It is also not so far from the Falconplein, used to be a Russian maffia runned place with all kinds of little shops with fake brands.
But as stated above, the locals have roared their mouths and it became a much nicer place now.
It is close to public transport as well.

It is also close to the exit of the guided tours of Antwerp beneath (sewages?).

I think there are less safer places in Antwerp.
and still it is a pretty safe place in the whole.

If you need some assistance with orientation once you got there, feel free to contact me. Not that I know all but I guess I know a little bit my way around there :)
