Verona Bus to city center
Posted: Sun December 9, 2007 03:33 AM UTC
Hello,

I'll be arriving in Verona's Porta Nuova train station and would like to know how to get to the city center using public transportation. If I can catch a bus from the train station, which one do I catch? Where exactly is the bus stop?

Thanks for any help.

Well, the bus station is right outside the train station which is fairly central, so it would be helpful to know where in Verona you are intending travelling to.

If you're going to somewhere in the historical center, it would be easier to walk (even with bags). When I visited Verona, my family and I walked from the train station to our hotel at Piazza Erbe, with our rolling suitcases, without problem.

Most - not all, but most - major train stations in Italy are either in the city center or are on the edge of the city center. In this case, Verona Porta Nuova is on the edge of the old city center - from the station to Piazza Bra (where the Roman Amphitheater is) is only 1.5 kilometers (according to www.viamichelin.com), and I really don't remember it being even that far....in any case, any easy walk.

As Billy says, if we had your destination address, we could guide you to the right bus (if a bus is even needed). But if you just want the "city center", you can make it on foot in a few minutes, and the entire city center just isn't that big...

The website for public transportation in Verona is http://www.amt.it/default.asp but the site is only in Italian. Still, you may find the route map at http://www.amt.it/linee_orari/index_lineeOrari.asp interesting (this is the map for weekdays and Saturdays only).

When you exit the train to the right is a tobacchi shop where you can purchase your ticket - right outside are where the busses come to take you to city center and you can ask say the hotel where you are staying what stop to llok to - we go to Via Septembre XXII which is a bit far to walk.

Thank you everyone for your input.

I want to go to Piazza delle Erbe from the train station. What bus number do I need to look for to get there.

Thanks.

I can only repeat that it is a very easy walk to Piazza delle Erbe and you could probably walk there in the time it would take to wait for a bus to arrive. That being said, I have no idea which bus it is. A taxi would probably be about EUR 7 or 8.

See line 73:
http://www.amt.it/accessibile/linee/orari.asp?l=73&p=i&m=2&st=1

Small buses, because biggest one cannot cross the narrow citycenter streets. Seems every 30 mins.

There is a "strong" line (a common path served by 2 or 3 lines) up to Porta Borsari, but then you will have to walk (500 meters or so)

Ciao

I can't speak for Verona, where I walked everywhere, but in other Italian cities I traveled with TONS of baggage, on city busses, without problem. Just try to avoid rush hour.

Italy is sort of a "laissez faire" country, where even if something is forbidden, people do it anyway ;-)...I do agree with Carly that if you can handle the luggage yourself, that you can probably take it on the bus (if there's room)...however, note what Carly said earlier about the taxi fare being 7 or 8 euro to the center...if I had large luggage and I just arrived into town, unless I was absolutely bankrupt, I would strongly consider taking the taxi from the station to the hotel with all my luggage...Francesco, does a fare of 7 or 8 euro sound right?

Ah Bill, how you know us! I read the travel rules on a bus just a few days ago, and it said something like "no bulky" items on the bus.

However i won't doubt. just jusmp in: if you have your regular ticket validated (on board) i doubt that they will fine a stranger tourist for not respecting a "flexible" rule... What is bulky?

So, if you don't want to take a taxi, do not esitate and go!

Happy Xmas to all the believers!

"ingombrante"

Ah! Like "encumber" in English (in = en, gombr = cumber)! But I imagine that we got "to encumber" through French, so things have to be different, right?

My dictionary says "cumbersome" (preserving the root), but "bulky" communicates pretty much the same meaning, which is "hard to handle"...thanks!
