i have read various opinions about car hire in langkawi and seek advise about the best possible deal that can be obtained there.

some sites allege that a lot of potential hirers crowd the jetty area. is it safe to deal with them.i assume these are unlicensed owners.

if some traveller has personal knowledge about reliable owner or operator, we would like to have contact data about such person please.

what would be a fair daily hire price for a small car as our group is likely to be small.

It has been a couple of years since I went to Langkawi and rented a car. But there are a lot of cars for hire at the jetty. Normally you can approach them even at the jetty on the mainland so that you won't waste time once you arrive at the island. The last time I got a car for around RM80.

Due to free tax island status, cars (taxis) are relatively cheap in Langkawi. When we hired a car some years ago, we were told to leave the car with the key inside the car at the jetty when we left the island. No one would steal the car!

So quite safe to rent any car from anyone at the jetty. You may want to choose a new and better car available.

That's true about the quality of the car. The first time the car was so old that we could only open 1 window... I think we could also open 1 door only too. So the second time we made sure we checked everything properly before driving off.

It depend when you want to be in Langkawi. Now is peak season, so you may pay up to RM 100 per car (US1 = RM 3.5). On most months it will be between RM 70 - RM 100 for a good 1.5 to 1.8 car. ( good for 4 - 5 persons) Maybe you can bargain if you need the car for longer period.

Yes you can get the car at the jetty, no need to do it at the hotel. Langkawi is an island, so no one can run away with the car. The best thing is to see the car before you agree to the price. Some charges by the day, but try to bargain for a 24 hors deal, i.e. if you start at 10.00 am, then one day is the next day 10.00 am NOT midnight.

Normally they will ask you to leave the car at the jetty or airport, with the key inside the car.

Yes, I agree with you that most of the car rental at Jetty Kuah the condition is very bad.. I go there and always rent a car from Jetty with a same situation.. Rental for a day sometime RM100 over but the quality is very bad.. Broke everywhere, window cannot open.. Until 1 day I found 1 company thru internet www.jaziraholidays.com.. Please log on.. We book the car thru website.. Yes, it's very satisfied price and also all the new car with the sticket at the car.. Then we know that car not illegal car.. Their got permitted for car rental.. It is not dangerous for us to drive in Langkawi..

thank you for the reply to car hire in langkawi. it is really a good site and i will definitely communicate with them before going to langkawi.

if you want to suggest some budget but nice eating places that will be helpful.
