Chamonix-Mont-Blanc getting from chamonix to venice via aosta
Posted: Sat December 8, 2007 03:06 AM UTC
We are heading to chamonix in may and the next stop on our trip will be venice.

It seems that the best/fastest way of getting to venice at this time of year will be to take a train from aosta. Is this correct?

I have also heard that the train from chamonix via martigny and brig is a very nice rail journey. However, it appears that this will take much more time and possibly money. Is it worth it?

how long does it take to get from chamonix to aosta by bus?
approximately how much will it cost?
and do we need to book seats on this bus service in advance?

any advice appreciated!

thanks,
Kaz

I'm afraid you can't book seat in advance on bus.. (if it's not changed), beside in some days Mt.Blanc's tunnel could take time to be passed.

I would go by train to Brig and then Milan and then Venice.
Fastest way. Beatiful landscapes.

It might be a nice rail journey but the SAVDA bus takes only 2 hours and runs several times a day. http://www.savda.it/ or http://www.savda.it/orari_tariffe.htm (the line is Aosta, Courmayeur, Chamonix). You can buy the tickets in Chamonix at the train station (which is where this bus stops) and ask them there if you need to make a reservation ahead of time or not (I don't think so as long as the bus is not full already of course). Or if the lift to Italy is open in May (you will need to check with the office of tourism) you can go over the mountain rather than through it, and see the mountains from up high, getting into Courmayeur by the Helbronner cable car (depends on how much luggage you are carrying).
