hi Paula and John. How nice that you're crossing over here again!
PJ, Paula and John already visited Brielle :-)
I can't remember if we did a little walk around town then. It was my birthday!
So if you want to try again, do come.
In any case, there are plenty of place to visit in the province Zuid-Holland.
Dordrecht is a definitive option. Schiedam is nice. Have you really explored Rotterdam well, because it is worth a longer visit. I've got a little driving tour on my Rotterdam page which gives you more of an idea of the diverse neighbourhoods.
Another possible tour from Barendrecht is southwest to see something of the most southern part of the province Zuid-Holland along the coast with its deltaworks:
Willemstad is nice, when you follow the A29 south of Barendrecht. After that, you could drive across the island Goeree-Overflakkee (N59/N215), visit Middelharnis and then on to the tiny town Goedereede.
After that you go north across the Haringvlietdam (N57) towards Hellevoetsluis (visit the old harbour) and 10 kms further on there's Brielle. From there, as you know, 10 minutes to the ferry.
Instead, from Willemstad you could go on a bit further along the N59 to Zierikzee (island Schouwen-Duiveland) which is really nice. Your return would be to follow the N59, up north to the Brouwersdam (N57) which takes you along Ouddorp, Goedereede, Hellevoetsluis, Brielle and then the ferry.
As a point of reference:
1) Barendrecht-Willemstad: about 20 minutes.
2) Barendrecht-Middelharnis or Barendrecht-Zierikzee is about 45 minutes.
3) Zierikzee-ferry/Europoort is about 50 minutes.
