Hi,
We are considering booking our honeymoon in Port Douglas and would be there for the first week of January.
I understand that this is the wet season, any advice on whether it will rain everyday and not be the right location for lazing by the beach/pool etc???

Hi, Most likely will not rain every day, and if it does rain often it is only for a few hours.

Good Luck,
Mike

It probably will rain every day but they are usually short but heavy downpours. You might be better off spending time on the reef where you can swim without having to worry about stingers etc. We spent a week on Reef Encounter recently and had a fantastic time they are on www.reeftrip.com They operate out of Cairns and instead of paying to do day trips to the reef you can stay out there.

Hi there,

Yes, it is the wet season up here in the Far North Qld.
The weather will get more humid and from now on the rains will start.
It doesn't rain everyday. When it rains it a huge down pour, this can last a day or more, or just a few hours.OR you can get no rain at all, it's in the hands of the weather gods.
The Port beach, 4 mile beach, will have stinger nets in, it is stinger season also. You must swim in the nets, some times you can't swim in the beach there as they close them when the stingers get into the nets, this is usually when the water is rough, not that 4 mile beach gets many large waves.

Having said all of that, there is still a huge amount of things you can do up from Port in the wet season.
All tours etc are still operating. The Quicksilver do there trips to the outer week every day of they year, unless the winds etc are too bad. They hire blue suits for you to wear when you go into snorkle etc, these suits are to protect you from any stingers.
The Cape Tribulation trip is great, even in the wet season. With this trip you will see the rainforest areas, beautiful.
You could also hire a car and head to Cairns/tablelands/Kuranda for day trips.

99.9% of accommodation have pools, aircon and are set up for the hot weather.

One thing you will get is good deals on accommodation at that time of year:)
Plus airfares within Aus. Where are you flying from? You haven't mentioned this on your homepage.

All in all, I would suggest that if you are looking for rainfree days, no humid weather and swimming at the beach every day etc don't come to Port at this time of year, I would, but I am telling you this as I don't want you to be disappointed and get the wrong opinion of this area.
It's my most favourite part of Aus, if you don't come then do make a trip at some other stage.

My husband and I spent part of our honeymoon in Port Douglas (actually we got married in Pt Douglas) ... but that was in August 04 ... however we visited the March before that to check out reception venues and the weather was unbearably hot, humid, poured with rain each day and entirely different from the blissfully gorgeous weather we experienced in Port in August.

Maybe we just hit it in a bad week, but if I was going in summer, i would make sure I was out on the water the whole time, but then you run the risk of the box jellyfish (summer is their big season).

Maybe consider delaying your honeymoon in Pt Douglas until around August OR consider going to a more southern destination in Australia if you have your heart set on January.

All the best and congratulations!! If you want some hotel suggestions for Port Douglas, check out the tips on my Pt Douglas page. If your budget is massive, definitely include a stay at Silky Oaks Wilderness Lodge in Daintree ... it is exquisite and worth every penny for the honeymoon experience!

the wet season is really humid
when i lived up in the northern territory we seldom ventured outside and it did rain every day ...usually hard in the morning and then in the afternoon for an hour
otherwise it was plain uncomfortable and im an aussie used to the heat!dont know how europeans would cope with the humidity
its the low season and cheaper but for a reason...i say ...go south ...try the south coast of nsw for instance...beautiful and unknown by foreign tourists
