Antibes Antibes......Is it safe?
Posted: Thu December 6, 2007 08:02 PM UTC
I m going to Antibes in May 2008 and it will be the first time in this area alone. I usually go to Greece but have this urge to go to the South Of France again.....I travelled all over the south years ago and missed out on the beautiful scenery because I was too busy partying! Now I am older and wiser (and a lot more sober!) and have always loved France.

Antibes? - safe and civilised, though I'm sure you could get into trouble if you really worked at it.

The only thing you have to worry about in Antibes is the traffic! Be sure to catch the views from inside the Picasso Museum . . . fabulous.

BTW, we love inland Provence. You don't say how long you will be there, but if it's more than a few days, try to get inland and explore the countryside and villages. It's a whole different world, and an enchanting one. St. Remy is a good base for exploration or if you are a budget traveler, choose one of the small nearby villages.

Antibes is safe. Just exercise a little bit of caution, as you would anyplace else. The only scary town in the area is Vallouris.

Gosh, we had a wonderful time in Vallauris. The Picasso War and Peace is there and it is a stunning experience. Admittedly we didn't visit anyplace in town but the Picasso / Pottery museum but we did have to park and walk around and there was no indication of any problem with safety. The tiny museum is nice, but the Picasso painting/fresco of War and Peace in the little chapel is an amazing experience. You stand in the center looking at Peace and you can actually feel the evil presence of War right above your head and behind you. It's chilling. I have recommended visiting it many times and will continue to do so.

We didn't find any safety issues in the Antibes area and we've been there at different times of the year, including July once and that's definitely tourist season. We are not night people so I can't comment on walking home at 2:00 AM but normal tourist activities are entirely safe. Obviously no one can guarantee absolute safety all the time; things happen but they do at home too. Use common sense and you should be fine.
