Personally I'd pick to stay on Gulangyu for at least 1 night. What's your expected price range?
Xiamen isn't really a shopping destination. Look up Xiamen's historical weather data at Weather Underground (http://www.wunderground.com/global/stations/59134.htm) and MSN Weather (http://weather.msn.com/local.aspx?wealocations=wc:CHXX0140). For more good information on Xiamen and around, look up Amoy Magic (http://www.amoymagic.com).

If you are planning to stay in Xiamen can I recommend the Super 8 hotel, Xiamen at 29 HOUJIANG DAI ROAD XIAMEN Tel : (86) 8120888
very nice hotel, friendly English speaking staff and well located. About £12 a night. Close to shops, food outlets and its a 30 minute walk to the coast (or take a quick cheap taxi)
