Re: Train to Seville Posted: Wed December 5, 2007 07:56 AM UTC
I have summarised all the various options for travel by bus/train between the Algarve (Faro) and Seville on a personal webpage www.algarvebus.info/001.htm - as a resident of Albufeira, I have been asked this question many times in other forums and as a new member here, I can make this information available to other Virtual Tourist members.
You can drive to Seville in about 2 hours but check that your car hire company will allow it across the border; some do not! Seville has a number of large car parks on the edge of the city and the city bus network is pretty good. www.tussam.es for local bus information. The Seville Metro is still under construction, so it's buses only apart from a very short tram line in the old city.
Driving in the old city centre is just about impossible, as most of the streets are closed to car traffic.
There are no trains across the border between the Algarve and Spain.
In winter it is not sensible to make the return trip Faro - Seville by the direct bus and get sufficient time for a look at the city. There are only four journeys each way on weekdays (one of which leaves Faro at 200am) and two at weekends and holidays; no services on January 1st.
Outbound bus from Faro winter mornings at 0820 arrives in Seville 1pm Spanish time.
Afternoon return buses from Seville are at 4.15pm then nothing until midnight!
The journey takes between 2hrs 45 and 3hrs 20 minutes from Faro. In summer there are two additional daily buses taking around 2hrs 50 minutes.
One way fare is about €18.
It is possible to do the one way trip by a combination of bus/ferry and train (on the Portuguese side) but that takes 4 or 5 hours even on a good day. Details are also on my webpage.
Hope that helps now and in future.
