TSU is in the 3rd ward. It is NOT a safe area.

Houston is a very large city, so it has many good and bad areas. There's not much in the vicinity of downtown that is safe and would be affordable for a college student.

There are a couple of small apartment complexes along Wheeler and Southmore west of Scott (stay away from Southmore AT Scott though), as well as a couple of places along Blodgett that are mostly TSU students. There are also some rentals along Tierwester back more into the neighborhood. But this is generally a bad area and you're not going to be able to walk anywhere.
Another option is Cambridge Oaks down the street, but that may be open only to UH students. Same with Cullen Oaks.
When I was at UH though, I lived on the other side of 288 in the Museum District. That still required a drive though.

Thank yall so much I looked on apt finder.com and found a few that were resonable. What about the area by the Galleria my cousin lives in The Aberdeen but I dont wanna pay that much and plus their kinda old. I guess I'll have to get a ticket one weekend to see what its like.

The area around the galleria is safe, but it might be expensive.

if you think the The Aberdeen Apartments are expensive then you are going to have to move a little further out because those apartments are pretty cheap and nice. They are one of the more reasonably priced apartments. Good Luck!

Quite a few UH students live in the Galleria area for some reason. There's a string of cheaper apartment complexes just north of 59, south of Richmond and west of Fountainview. Not the best area, and the apartments aren't very nice either. It's actually pretty far from the campuses, so I never really understood it, unless they were living there to be close to the night club scene on Richmond. There's also a string of apartments along Richmond between Montrose and Weslayan that tend to get college students, but these are more expensive.
If you're willing to get that far away, you should look at more central like the Museum District or Montrose, especially if you want a safe neighborhood conducive to walking. Personally, I always found the best places in Houston were smaller complexes and even garage apartments. These are harder to find though, sometimes only by driving by and seeing the sign, as they don't tend to advertise the really good stuff. You can also check the web sites of local property management companies as they tend to deal exclusively with these sort of places.

You may want to reconsider TSU.
