Kilimanjaro National Park Sleeping Bag on Kilimanjaro
Posted: Sun December 2, 2007 02:51 PM UTC
Hello,

I'm currently planning a trip to Kilimanjaro in July 2008. Can anyone tell me, if I should bring my own sleeping bag or if the tour operators also provide sleeping bags?
If I can rent them, are they suitable for the low temperatures above 4000m or are they not so high qualitative?

Thanks, Streli

I brought my summer bag, but when we got to the Hotel Marangu who set up our climb, they told me it was too light. They made us lay out all of our gear and then they told us what was ok and what was not. Then they got me a heavier bag from their storehouse for me to use. You need a winter bag rated to 0F or better. I ended up using both bags at once, and I was happy I did. We met other folks on the mountain who do not have warm enough gear, and some had to go down without summiting. Check with your tour operator to see if they provide equipment like the Hotel Marangu does. Or bring a good winter sleeping bag.

Have a great trip!

Hi Streli,

I second Dave's comments. Our Tour Operator also inspected our gear and replenished anything they felt wasn't suitable for the climb. They also had sleeping bags to rent but I had my own 0 degree bag....which is highly recommended! I had no problem sleeping at night in those arctic temperatures. I would contact whomever your using on your trek to ensure they can provide that type of bag. If you have room I would advise to pack along a Thermarest pad as well. I was able to roll it up tight enough to fit in my pack and that extra padding was a tremendous added protection from the cold ground.

Your sleep is VERY important after those long treks on Kili, so you want to be as comfortable as possible along the route.

Good luck and enjoy!
